That's why I usually start with a brief review of the subject and provide a formula sheet with the important formulas and concepts when needed. Then, I work through one or more typical exercises with the student, explaining the steps involved. Finally, the student will do exercises on their own, using the formula sheet (using formulas is the best way to remember them). I will then be there to assess their understanding, answer their questions, and help them when necessary.
