Trusted teacher: Can learning English be fun, insightful, productive and effective at the same time? I believe so! Whatever your background or profession, deciding to learn a foreign language is a great way to add another dimension to your life and make your mind work in a new way. You become a (slightly) different person, since along with a new language, one learns to look at the world in a slightly different way. This is why my approach to teaching English is not only aimed at laying or strengthening the foundational knowledge - grammar, speaking, writing and listening skills, but also at introducing students to the culture of the English-speaking population. We will find out what English speakers find funny, what drives them to tears, what makes them feel proud and what they get embarrassed about. Open to students of all levels, my course usually is taught online, using a variety of visual aids and a wide range of material, from textbooks to YouTube videos. In teaching advanced learners, I often refer to pieces of literature such as novels and poems, since they easily spark discussions, which in turn improves the students' grasp and feel of the language. In doing so, I take students beyond ordinary textbooks and grammar books, since they are no more than guides to learning, not absolute authorities, and because to me language is a living, constantly evolving matter, which you must submerge yourself into in order to understand. In addition to my unorthodox approach, what sets me apart is a collection of unique, language-related experiences, which translate into a good ability to understand nuances of the English language. A native Russian speaker, I have lived in the UK for over 5 years, went to a Scottish boarding school and have even completed a university degree in English. I offer one-to-one tuition or tutoring in maths, biology and chemistry from secondary school level to high school (maturité). I can also help with the preparation of marked assignments/tests. These are subjects that I work on a daily basis, in which I have always had excellent results, and in which I am used to helping students in difficulty. I base my teaching mainly on solving exercises progressively, to understand where the difficulties come from and to be able to work on them. This also helps to establish an excellent understanding of the theory as well as a very good repertoire of ‘typical’ exercises, which are often required for graded homework. I'm a good listener and I adapt to the student in order to understand their perspective. This allows me to approach problems from an angle that suits the student better. A more intuitive understanding of the theory, combined with a gradual and regular approach to exercises, gives students self-confidence and enables them to really improve in the long term! I'm very comfortable using webcam so I offer this support online! I use Zoom and a tablet which allows me to write and present the lessons directly on the student's screen.

Knows very well the French language and not on a fluent level, but also the technicalities behind it. Is willing to take time with you and work on your mistakes, as well as trying to explain some French key moments that are difficult to understand for foreign language speakers in a way that is understandable. Always makes sure to challenge you and sees how you can improve! Had a very lovely experience :)

Even though I'm married to a US citizen and have been speaking English at home and work for years, I felt I was no longer improving until I started regular lessons with Tom. The lessons are incredibly helpful. I am very much interested in improving my grasp of idiom and usage. Tom is very good at finding my mistakes and helping me to improve my English. He's also very reliable, and he's flexible regarding the timings of the meetings. It's a fun experience, and I highly recommend Tom!

Inès is an amazing teacher, she helped and still helping me to strengthen my core knowledge of Italian and allows me to progress at my own speed, tailoring the class to my needs and the topics that will be useful for me.
