My name is Guy and I live in Delft, The Netherlands. I started tutoring on Preply in December 2022 and I’ve gained a lot of experience since then. Apart from tutoring, I work as a journalist for a local newspaper and as a text writer. I’ve found that I like to work with the Dutch language in a professional way, also by tutoring.

Most of the classes I give are conversation classes, with topics ranging from buying a bread in the bakery for beginning students, all the way to conversations about professional and news related topics for advanced students. I help students to gain more knowledge about the Dutch language, but above all I help them to become more confident and fluent in Dutch conversation. I teach students of all levels from beginner to advanced and I focus mainly on adults. Teenagers are welcome too.

Beginning students need a lot more explanation than advanced students, so I adjust my lessons according to the level and interest of the student. To advanced students I only explain grammar every now and then if they want, as I think they benefit mostly from practice.

I sometimes give listening and reading exercises during classes if the student likes this. These exercises can help the student recognize authentic Dutch speech or text better and are adjusted to the student’s level. For students who wish to do homework, I have made many exercises such as gap-fill and translation exercises. I also have a book from which I can give exercises and material to study.

Apart from being a native Dutch speaker, I speak English fluently and some German. I also have a limited command of the French and Spanish language.

Teaching experience:
I’ve been gaining experience as a tutor since December 2022, and it has become not only my job but my hobby too. I love to help people with learning this small but challenging language and getting to know many interesting people from all over the world in the process.

Ik ben een echte Nederlander met een grote nieuwsgierigheid naar andere talen en culturen. Ik heb eigenlijk een technische achtergrond in het Watermanagement, maar ben later meer mijn echte interesses gaan volgen. Ik help studenten bij het leren van de Nederlandse taal en doe dat voornamelijk door middel van conversatielessen. Mijn lessen zijn afwisselend en ik probeer altijd een goede band met mijn studenten op te bouwen. Momenteel woon ik in Cambodja, waarvandaan ik ook les geef.

Education

Ik heb in Nederland de basisschool en middelbare school doorlopen (havo/vwo). Daarna ben ik watermanagement gaan studeren aan de Hogeschool Rotterdam 2012-2018. Vervolgens heb ik nog diverse cursussen gevolgd en heb ik gewerkt als freelancer tot ik uiteindelijk als tutor begon.

Expérience / Qualifications

Tutor sinds december 2022. Tijdens mijn studie heb ik in totaal een jaar in de Filipijnen gewoond voor stage en afstuderen. Daar heb ik mijn Engelse taal sterk verbeterd waardoor ik nu lessen vanuit het Engels naar het Nederlands kan geven. Naast tutoren houdt ik ook van schrijven en doe ik regelmatig schrijfopdrachten waardoor ik de Nederlandse taal goed beheers.

I use several methods which are specially conceived to teach Dutch to people who have a different mother tongue. I really like to use methods out of the ordinary like role games or methods with which you learn while playing. All these adapted to the student's situation of course. As I learned myself a couple of other languages, it is easy for me to detect difficulties a student can encounter and adapt the way of learning. I can teach in English, French, German and Russian.

I am a Belgian (Flemish) and French student with a Masters in International Public Law (Amsterdam) and a Masters in Global development (University of Copenhagen). World traveler, I have lived in Thailand, Denmark, Greece, the Netherlands, US, Switzerland and many more countries, where I both dtudies and worked as a legal advisor.

2021-2022:
I worked at "bijlesthuis," a Dutch tutoring institution, where I primarily taught French, Dutch, and English to adult learners seeking to improve their language skills. During the same period, I also provided classes to other students through Apprentus.

2021:
Through Apprentus and other websites, I assisted several younger students (ages 5-15) in Bern and Geneva, helping them improve their skills in subjects such as Maths and French.

2017-2020:
I worked for three years at a tutoring institution in Geneva called ARA, where I primarily taught French, Mathematics, and English.

During this time, I also spent two years working at a private school called Florimont, where I supported students aged 11-16 across various subjects by assisting them with their homework.
