In this lesson I will take you through the rich possibilities to tell your story. There are no boundaries in shapes. Do you dare to take a deep-sea dive or experience the magic of film?

FIND YOUR FILM
Every great filmmaker started experimenting at some point. In this workshop we will make our own 1-minute documentary film. You learn to sit in the director's seat, dive into the world of editing and leave with your own film. From fascination to film: you did it!

My name is Sophie, and I am a Dutch documentary filmmaker who works internationally. I am passionate about human behavior and the differences between the inner and outer worlds of people. I explore human-interest themes in a way that is personal and brings people together. Sophie (1995) is a documentary maker and director, specializing in stories around mental health and vulnerable themes, told with a slightly poetic style, cinematic eye and depth.

In 2019, she graduated in Film from the Utrecht School of the Arts, specializing in documentary. During her bachelor's degree, she interned in program development, made a documentary in Uganda, and directed her participatory graduation documentary, "The Prince on the Gray Horse," which aired on Makers van Morgen (VPRO, NPO 2 Extra).

After graduating, she gained work experience at the creative breeding ground for film talent Docwerk (NTR, Van Osch Films) and won the Gelderland Film Pitch 3 (Go Short - International Short Film Festival) with Synchroon (2022).

In 2022, Sophie began her Master's in Film Directing at Edinburgh College of Art. She graduated with honors in 2023 with the short documentary "Luna in Wonderland." During her Master's, she focused on Film Medicine: making films about mental health.

After her master's degree, she won the Amsterthem Pitch (Shortcutz) with Chico and started the development program Teledoc Campus. This resulted in Als de Zee (As the Sea) (2025), which was broadcast and selected for the Golden Calf competition at the Netherlands Film Festival.

In 2025, she was selected for the Scottish Documentary Institute's Bridging the Gap development program for a new film plan. In addition to her own work, Sophie works freelance as a researcher, director, and editor for documentaries, television, and commercial productions.
