How to learn Chemistry and Maths effectively and do well in your exams

I work with pupils who are currently doing Nat 5 Chemistry, Nat 5 Maths and Higher Chemistry. I teach the full content of the SQA syllabus using on line resources with an additional focus on learning how to answer typical past paper questions. I describe this as becoming “street wise” – knowing which parts of the syllabus are regularly examined and knowing how to answer the questions in a way that gets maximum marks. This allows the most effective use of time and it means there are very few surprises come exam time. For example, in Higher Chemistry there has been a question on titration in the last 5 exams. That makes this topic particularly worthy of focus and revision – so I’d go through the questions and make sure that pupils understand what is being asked and together we work out how to answer the questions. There are many examples like this in both subjects and becoming “street wise” is really effective. My students really like this analytical approach to learning and working like this makes topics easier to remember. I never put any pressure on people to come up with the answers by themselves, as working as a team is far more effective and more enjoyable. I am also available at any time to help with any difficulties that arise out with the tutoring sessions.
Extra information
I am a retired Chemist living in Midlothian who worked in industry in the area of developing new medicines. I have loved Chemistry and Maths subjects since I was at school and then at university and I am passionate about teaching them to young people. As a father of two young adults who have recently passed through the education system, I understand the challenges that young people face. My motivation in becoming a tutor was to make a difference and help young people to reach their maximum potential. For the last 2 academic years I have been tutoring pupils across the central belt and I’m fully familiar with the Chemistry and Maths syllabus. I would describe myself as someone who is gentle in approach but highly motivated to work in a tailored way with individuals to help them achieve very positive outcomes. I have worked with young people of different abilities and the results we’ve achieved together have been excellent. I have a first class honours degree, a PhD and I studied two years of psychology with a focus on memory and recall.
