Composing for Opera, learning an interdisciplinary artform

Composing for opera reaches far beyond music composition and when it's done well it is part of an expansive and complex matrix of disciplines, practices, and approaches. In this class we will consider dramaturgy, structure, multimedia collaborative process, composing for voice (from bel canto to neutral conversation), consider dramatic practices, opera specific methodologies and theatre practice.

Whatever your style the principles, analysis, advice and guidance I can offer will take your opera to the next level.

As the artistic director of Waste Paper Opera, I have composed, collaboratively written, and co-directed 8 large scale operas, worked on projects for film, art installation, and even performed in a swimming pool. I have experience as a director, having trained with the late Sir Graham Vick at Birmingham Opera Company and National Opera Studio. I've performed across Europe and the USA as a singer, clown, actor, and musician, most notably with Brookly-based performance group Object Collection.

I have a holistic and dramaturgical approach to composition. I can help to question what the work is really about, what it needs and how to take it to a level where it is honest and unique.

Sessions with me are very open ended and relaxed and yet highly productive. We will discover, analyse, experiment, and enrich your craft by embracing the multiplicity of composing for opera.

Ableton Live is the new standard for electronic music. Its very easy to learn and with only a couple of lessons you will be able to start making your own music! Used by almost all EDM, House, Deep House and even Pop artists it is the must-have tool in the new decade. In our classes we will go over making beats, basic music theory, song-writing techniques and production techniques including advanced sound design with synthesizers. If requested, we can also move on to mixing to make your tracks sound just like what you hear on the radio.

I specialize in Ableton Live and have released albums on multiple record labels. I hold a degree in Music Production and Sound Engineering from Point Blank Music School and I am currently the Music Content Manager at Vochlea Music and the lead Ableton tutorial writer for Attack Magazine. I also own my own recording and production studio in East London.

My method is ... LEARN BY MAKING YOUR MUSIC!

The student will learn techniques, stylistic elements, tricks ... already by working on his first tracks: to keep motivation and satisfaction high, the result is always visible!
The lessons are face-to-face and personalised according to the level of experience and the musical style of the student. The presentation of the information is clear and accompanied by practical examples.

I'll show you how to:
- use Ableton Live,
- program and control synthesizers and virtual instruments,
- use microphone and sound card to record your voice and your instruments,
- process sound with effects (plugins) and optimize it for diffusion (mixing and mastering),
- make your songs, from start to the last details.

I also speak Spanish, French, German and Italian.

I'm Andres, a music producer, new to this platform. I enjoy teaching and although my approach is more on the creative side, I will give you the necessary technical tools for you to develop an easy and fluent workflow. Logic Pro is one of the best and most complete Digital Audio Workstations out there. If your passion is creating music or sound, either as a career or a hobby, this is a course for you.
I offer one-on-one lessons where my goal is to show students of different ages and levels how to achieve their own, unique sound with the tools that the software provides. There will be different areas to focus depending on each student, but those include but are not limited to music theory for producers, audio engineering for producers, song structuring, beat-making and more.

I have instructed students of different age groups in saxophone performance and music theory (including counterpoint, harmony and composition) up until university level, in Spain and the UK. After graduating from Cambridge with a double starred first, taking into consideration my academic results and teaching experience, I have also been selected for inclusion in the Supervisor Registry to teach counterpoint and harmony papers. My approach to lessons is very flexible, and I always try to adapt to the needs and qualities of each student. I believe that communication is essential, and at the beginning of each lesson I ask my students if they found my recommendations from the previous lesson helpful and how they see their progress. After this spoken introduction, we proceed to work on some warm-up and technical exercises. Then, we play some studies and pieces, or go over some music theory exercises, trying to apply the advice from the previous lesson and make further improvements. Finally, we conclude the lesson with a summary, listing the main key points and suggestions and comparing our experience to the previous lessons, trying to find a clear sense of progression and a coherent line of work towards a certain goal. This teleological mindset occupies a central position in my methodology, and I always encourage my students to look ahead and plan a series of stimulating events or challenges to look foward to, such as a concert, a recital, a presentation or an exam.

Now a days the role of Music Producer has changed drastically. Not only do producers have to learn the business and build artists, they also are in charge of making the music themselves. This has made the demand for Producers way higher while the role has gotten even more interesting and challenging.

In the lessons I will be teaching the students how to make music (preferably with the software Fl Studio), navigate the music industry, build clients and push the boundaries of modern day sounds. I have found that teaching production ignites passion in students not just for music but in the arts as a whole. I will also be giving students access to emails and connections to artists I work with as rewards for dedication/practice to create more incentive to work harder.

This is a class intended for anyone looking to improve their musicianship and keyboard skills. Whether you're interested in playing classical music or popular tunes this class is meant to give you the technical guidance and musical knowledge required to achieve your goals.
The curriculum will be tailored to match the student's level and interests, with the possibility to focus more on performance, composition or theory. We will cover practice tips and students will get to pick their repertoire or bring forward pieces they'd like to work on.

Two keywords form the base of the singing technique I teach: relaxation and engagement. Inspired by the Alexander technique, we need the body to be completely free from any muscle tension before and after producing a sound. Then, to create a sound of quality, the body also needs to be engaged and free. By releasing all the unnecessary tension, you will be able to sing all the arias of your dreams. I will give some weekly exercises in singing and music theory and we will correct them together during the lesson.
I was part of the choir of the French public radio broadcaster for 7 years. I have a diploma in Music theory from the CRR of Boulogne-Billancourt. I even have a degree in Pop music and I am currently finishing my Master's in musical theatre and composition.
My lessons are for all ages, all levels, and all voices. I specialised in the voice of Countertenor.

My name is Andrea, I have recently concluded my Artist's Master in keyboard instruments at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. My passion for music induced me to apply in the “Conservatorio Profesional de Música de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria” in the course of Harpsichord as my principal study. After 10 years studying music and obtaining the diploma of “Grado de Enseñanzas Profesionales” in the conservatory, I developed a deep interest for Classical and Early music for keyboard instruments.

Discovering a historical and musical universe, I decided to continue my performing and theoretical investigation studying the bachelor course in keyboard instruments including piano, harpsichord and organ. I had the amazing opportunity to obtain a scholarship and study at the "Conservatorio Tartini di Trieste", in Italy. Working with exceptional teachers, i was able expand my linguistic abilities and cultural appreciation for the expressive diversity of Keyboard music. I have discovered the magnificent variety between many composers all around Europe and the distinct features and techniques they utilized to improvise and to embellish their pieces. During this artistic journey, i have had extraordinary performance experiences as a soloist including playing at the Parlament of Brussels and the National Gallery in Bosnia. Recently, living in London has inspired me to take part in a wide variety of exciting projects such as performing as a keyboard accompanist in Opera Scenes and with the Guildhall Baroque Orchestra in the Milton Court Concert Hall.
