Understanding music is important for anyone looking to become a musician. Music is like a language; an art and a science. Once you understand the building blocks of music, you can add colors to your canvas, so to speak. Music lessons start from the beginning and gradually work towards musical goals. Even if you are an intermediate learner, it's good to brush up on the basics. Generally, lessons are catered towards early learners with interest in mastering their instrument (voice included!)

Lessons range from 30 minutes to one hour in length and are catered to students' learning styles and strengths. Early music education has been shown to improve cognitive function, memory, language, social health and emotional wellness. These benefits last for years to come. Music is a gift that continues to give for years to come. Thank you!

About Me
Hello! My name is Allison. I teach music lessons ranging from guitar, piano, mandolin and voice. My primary instruments are guitar and voice, though I enjoy teaching piano to beginners. My teaching philosophy is that everyone is capable of learning an instrument. When you learn how to play a musical instrument, it adds sparkle to life! There are many studies that show that learning how to play a musical instrument helps cognitive function, eases stress and increases social wellness, along with many other benefits. My focus when teaching centers on the learning style of a student. I work with many different types of learning styles and abilities and enjoy customizing lessons to best fit you. My primary intention is to encourage you in your musical progress.
Education
I hold a BA from Earlham College in Liberal Arts. The school focused on a multidisciplinary, socratic method of learning. Much of my training form the school was based in learning "how to learn" and teach others. I focused primarily on philosophy, religion, social theory and biology.
Experience / Qualifications
I founded Music for the Heart in 2017, when I was approached by a local music teacher. She invited me to teach a class for high school orchestra and choir students on composition and improvisation. Since then, I have been teaching music privately and in group settings.

It's time to learn to enjoy making music from a teacher who customizes your lessons around your goals and styles.

I teach voice, keyboard/piano, composition/songwriting, theory, speech, and acting. With multiple music degrees and a lifetime of performance experience, I provide the technical know-how and combine that with my creativity and fun-loving personality to truly customize your learning experience.

I've performed most styles, from Gospel and worship music to opera and hip-hop. I've lived and made music in four countries including three Latin American and Caribbean countries, which has helped shape my style and creativity.

My learning and teaching style is analytic, and so I take care to make sure that you understand each process and idea as concepts build on one another. But my no-nonsense approach insists that you will be playing and singing your favorite music almost immediately.

On the piano, I generally focus on chord theory and build from there. My sight reading method is unique and helps you to bypass the endless process of tedious reading laid out in the popular method books. For young students, I might start them with sight reading until they are able to understand the logic of chord theory.

For singers and songwriters, as well as speakers and actors, we lay a solid basis of technique and then look at popular examples from artists and styles you admire, whole working to expand your musical niche.

Most importantly, our goal is to ensure that you will enjoy creating music for the rest of your life.
