About Me
English language proofreading/copy editing and/or learning/assistance with a native speaker! Are you tired of not relevant translations, your ‘marketing message’ not hitting the audience? Are you tired of learning grammar? Are you tired of reading/learning material not relevant to your “real requirements”? Do you just wish to be able to communicate better or make a better presentation or hold a more productive meeting? Do you want to reach a ‘wider’ audience with your products/services? Do you want vocabulary over grammar?
I am a linguist – native English, German as a second ‘mother tongue’, intermediate French and basic Hungarian. I love languages – why? Language is communication and communication is key to living our daily lives, be it work, social etc.
I am a mature English native speaker born in Africa of English parents. Apparently by age 7, I spoke the main native language, English and other local dialects. I communicated and often, apparently, translated for my parents. In School and University, I followed this path. Languages brought me the opportunity to, work in, and travel to so many places that it has been my joy throughout my life.
I grew up with a love of languages, dialects etc. At age 10, I was learning Latin and French, later German. I hate ‘linguistics’ – the root and grammar of a language necessary to pass exams and be told you are proficient or fluent. I have lived and worked in the UK, USA, Austria, Germany and Hungary – often living off ‘English Communication’. Is that enough? I say no and have immersed myself in trying to communicate on my own with locals. My studies helped with German but it was the 12+ years living in either Germany or Austria and ‘opening’ my mouth that brought me the fluency – not the text books!
I am a mature ‘English Gentleman’, currently living in Hungary. I have 35+ years of business/finance experience from my career in Banking, where communication was the key to success. I am internationally well travelled where your best experiences/successes are gained through ‘communication’. I have also served on various Supervisory Boards in Germany, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria where communication and understanding were paramount. Through this experience I certainly believe that I can put any of your ‘english communications’ into the relevant tone and language.
My own experience of learning languages has involved both formal and informal learning. My Hungarian has improved rapidly in the last 8 years, mainly because I have a young daughter who is bilingual (English/Hungarian).
I offer programmes of ‘communication/conversation’ and/or ‘teaching’ to any individual/company that is looking to move their language skills beyond learning ‘where the nearest train station is’ and being able to ask that in a grammatically correct manner. Do you wish to ‘communicate’? – if so I offer ‘tailor made’ programmes of conversation and communication based on a 30 minute ‘free’ conversation to understand your requirements/speciality where improvement in English speaking is sought.
I live in Budaors, so this locale and Budapest do not create ‘logistical issues’ in terms of teaching/conversation events. Beyond these boundaries, modern technology/communication applications make programmes easy via a range of social media.
Beside one-to-one or group programmes in conversation or communication, I also offer assistance in the preparation of the following issues,
• Blogs in English
• Presentations and presentation skills coaching
• Board Papers
• Formal Correspondence
• Marketing Communications
• Websites
• Public information – particularly a company’s annual report
• Investor Information
• Email/social media communication
• CVs
• Motivation Letters
• EU Submissions for finance/funding
Internal Corporate Communication
During the past few years I have had a wide variety of ‘students’ varying in age. With this has come an incredibly wide range of subjects to research, prepare for sessions and then discuss with the students. I have had the pleasure of working with ‘students’ from age 8 to 55 and have covered CVs; motivation letters; interview preparation for differing jobs being sought; purchasing management; sales management; coaching a top Hungarian doctor in the preparation of an international presentation on a complex procedure in laparoscopic surgery; data protection; conspiracy theories; Swiss banks and Nazi gold; fairy tales; South Korean pop music; fashion through the ages; murder mysteries; green innovation; COVID19 and its impacts; eight original websites translated to English were ‘reworked’; two submissions to Brussels (translated to English) for EU funds were copy edited ; an original Russian language ‘brochure’ translated to English for a Bitcoin product was also copy edited and many more.
During this period, I have also used Netflix, YouTube; Podcasts and other material to encourage active participation in session discussion. I have personally learned a lot more than I knew about many topics which has also been very exciting. We have watched David Attenborough programmes; other nature series; Forensic Files; documentary films on social media etc.
Obviously COVID19 also had its impact and during lockdown periods I moved to Zoom sessions or other social media, with one corporate client we had ‘hybrid’ sessions where group members connected via Zoom or Facebook to group sessions being held at the office while they were on holiday.
