Trusted teacher: Do you love to sing? I want to help you realize your full potential as a singer and to guide and encourage you as you progress. I am a professional singer, singing teacher, and vocal coach with an extensive academic background in singing. I was educated in classical at the conservatories of Vienna and Berlin, and in modern singing at the Taller de Músics in Barcelona. I have 18 years of professional experience in Netherlands, Austria, Germany, and Spain, and am experienced in a range of styles, including classical, musical, jazz, modern and flamenco. As a vocal coach, I can help you to prepare performances, recordings, and for auditions. Knowledge about the vocal organs and their interaction with the breath helps us to train our voices effectively, to create sound consciously, and to advance in our singing, while respecting vocal health, and the uniqueness, range, and capacities of each individual voice. In our classes together, you will acquire this knowledge and develop your singing through specific, individually tailored, one-on-one vocal training, breath support, and ear training. You will learn to expand the vocal register, volume and tone, vocal dynamics and vocal agility, and increase your repertoire, as well as working on interpretation, expressiveness, and style. Singing lessons are individually tailored to suit you, your objectives, and your voice. Due to increasing demand for online lessons they are offered via Skype, from the comfort of your home and according to your own schedule. Please let me know your needs and availability.

Trusted teacher: Hello! I am an Amsterdam based musician offering tutorials in piano, trumpet, cornet, harmony, counterpoint, theory, and other general music-y things in English! I’m also available to direct rehearsals and concerts. Currently a masters composition student under Richard Ayres and Willem Jeths at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, I have a Bachelor of Music (Hons) Composition degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where I completed all of the harmony and counterpoint electives, and prior to this was accepted into Chetham’s School of Music as a joint principle study composer and trumpet player. I gained my ABRSM grade 8 piano at this time, after obtaining my grade 8 cornet 3 years prior. I have won multiple awards, including the BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers’ Competition in 2013, and my varied and diverse music has been played by ensembles such as the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, members of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Red Note Ensemble, and European Youth Brass Band; broadcast on radio and television both nationally in the UK and internationally; and performed for royalty and at events such as the BBC Proms and the Total BWF Badminton World Championships. Furthermore, I am also passionate about conducting others works as well as my own, rehearsing ensembles of all standards, ages, and varieties, organising events, as well as tutoring – a former pupil gaining a place at a prestigious specialist music school in the UK before going on to study at a conservatoire. I have been described as clear and inspiring, being able to give students confidence in their work. “Tom kept me stimulated and inspired in moments when I would run out of ideas, and created structure and direction in moment when I felt unsure with what to do.” I also enjoy my work as a BBC Proms Inspire ambassador, which involves assisting at workshops, advising and mentoring young composers. Music Theory is important to all classical musicians. It not only compliments their practical activities, it is essential in being able to read and understand the music they play. Topics covered will include clefs, time signatures (simple, compound, irregular, and irrational - e.g. 7/6 - for students who want a challenge), chords, keys, rhythms, and harmony. Once the basics are mastered, students begin to focus more on harmony and counterpoint, examining and learning to write chorales in the style of J.S. Bach, before moving on to fugues and looking at the ways in which other composers have used harmony. I also have knowledge of jazz harmony and am able to discuss this with students if they wish. Contrary to popular belief, music theory isn't boring! Please contact me to chat about your (child’s) musical goals and ambitions. I am able to travel to homes and offices and have a flexible schedule to meet your needs! I have also taught over Skype in the past, where there’s the option of screen sharing, making it possible to demonstrate things on screen. Thank you for reading and I hope to hear from you soon! Thomas

Violin and Viola lessons in Amsterdam with Maya (Amsterdam)
Maya
Our first lesson was an exploration of the feeling of holding the viola and the bow and of playing some notes pizzicato and with the bow. Maya was enthusiastic, patient and flexible in adapting to what I could and wanted to try. Her calm approach (letting learning sink in, allowing a process of getting used to the playing and learning) made me feel very comfortable and inspired!
