For this class, students will learn how to hold the violin, learn to read rhythm and musical notes and understand the basics of the violin.
I have taught many younger students and some adults as well! Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns with regard to my teaching style.

About Me

Hello there!

My name is Cristal and I teach Violin Lessons. I am a full-time public school teacher that teaches general music for grades K-5 and I started playing violin when I was in middle school so it has been around 10 years.
I am a young teacher and have a caring view of teaching. I do not believe in negativity in my classroom and feel that music should be a safe space for anyone and everyone. With that said I do not focus on performing as this can be an area of extreme stress for some people and I focus on the student's ability to learn and to grow. My job is to give students the building blocks of music so they can learn more on their own. Building up their confidence to be able to perform for themselves rather than for other people.
Music is an artistic outlet that can help anyone relieve stress by focusing your time on something creative for a few minutes a day.

I also am able to teach beginner to intermediate music theory.

I teach violin and viola lessons with the aim of improving technique, musicality, and interest in the instrument. Learning a string instrument can be challenging, but I believe it is also one of the most rewarding endeavors you can undertake.

I focus on sound production and facility of the instrument, and try to make sure that every student is learning repertoire that helps them and interests them.

Learning about violin playing from theory to performance, how to position right and left hand, how to check and improve intonation, how to practice various techniques and solve different kind of technical problems.
We can work on standard violin school textbooks, from basic exercises through scales, studies to simple pieces and then to more demanding violin pieces like concertos and sonatas.
If someone prefers to learn basic tunes such as popular melodies and violin cover songs, that’s possible as well.

Hi, I'm Katie! I've lived and worked in New York City for 7 years, and absolutely love connecting with musicians such as yourself. I perform on Broadway at Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, Some Like it Hot, and previously at Dear Evan Hansen; with American Ballet Theatre and American Symphony, and with my violin/guitar duo All Strings Attached. I have performed as an aerial violinist with Cirque Musica and onstage bluegrass fiddler at New London Barn Playhouse. Besides teaching privately, I work at the 92nd Street Y, and am certified in Books 1-4 of the Mark O'Connor Fiddle Method!

I am now offering piano and violin lessons for beginners and intermediate students including kids, teens and adults. I use a student-centred pedagogy to help students reach their individual goals, whether they want to learn a classical repertoire or their favourite tunes from movies, musicals, etc. On top of that, I teach theory, improvisation, and various mindfulness and embodiment tools that cultivate technical and performance skills. I have a bachelors in psychology and violin performance from York University in Canada. In addition, I also have experience working with neurodiverse populations and low-vision populations-I am both:)

How do you learn and what are your goals in learning music? I aim to make learning music as interesting and accessible as possible. I use a scaffolded approach to teaching that pairs physically sustainable playing techniques (Alexander Technique) with built-upon previous knowledge and interests. I hold MM and BM degrees from New York University and The University of Iowa and studied with Melissa White and Gregory Fulkerson for the entirety of my Masters of Music at New York University.
I am a violinist and violist currently living and working in New York City. I have played in such venues as Lincoln Center Summer Stages, Carnegie Hall, Duomo di Orvieto, among others. I grew up playing bluegrass with my parents and now genre-hop among traditional classical music, contemporary classical, pop, singer-songwriter, musical theater, jazz, avant-garde, and folk. For these reasons and more, I enjoy tailoring the repertoire and technique education to the student's goals and interests. I have taught 3 year olds, elementary kids, high schoolers, college students, and adult learners, and enjoyed all within the age range for various reasons.

*Development of competencies*

Violin/viola students will learn a wide range of musical repertoire from popular children's songs to classical works. In the classes they will learn how to hold the instrument, the care of the viola/violin, and what is involved in playing it, where they will be given the technical musical tools to develop their maximum potential in order to play the violin with a pleasant, grandiloquent sound and enjoy each note through the stroke of the bow on the strings.

Music is a beautiful thing that today can be anything from a brief escape from reality, to a passion, to a hobby to enjoy. I help people learn about all types of music, and aid them in forging their own relationship with it. Experienced in many different genres and styles, I seek to expand people's musical views and show them that regardless of who you are, where you're from and what you do, music can be whatever you want it to be for you, and it's my job to help you figure out what that is and find what your passion in music is.
