Están armonizados en los niveles del Marco Común Europeo de Referencia para las Lenguas. Incluyen los siguientes seis niveles, en orden ascendente: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2. Estos dos diplomas son aptos para todas las edades y todos los públicos.
Además, el DELF B2 y, cada vez más, el DALF C1, permiten a los estudiantes ingresar en universidades francesas, europeas o francófonas, y en ciertas Grandes Ecoles.
