English with an Oxbridge Tutor (Cambridge PhD, MPhil, Supervisor, Assessor)

I offer individually tailored lessons in English, drawing on my extensive experience researching, teaching and assessing the subject at the University of Cambridge — from which I am about to obtain a PhD, hold an MPhil, and where I have for the past almost four years provided instruction and dissertation supervision to undergraduate students, as well as assessed applicant entrance examinations. As such, I have taught both more general modules within literary, linguistic and cultural history, theory and analysis (among them 'Practical Criticism & Critical Practice I' and 'II') and more specialist papers and dissertations, particularly within the period 1830–Present (such as 'English Literature & Its Contexts 1830–1945' and 'English Literature & Its Contexts 1870–Present), and assessed for a range of examinations (including the 'CELAT' and 'CMLAT').
I have particular experience imparting and improving students' critical, analytical, reading and writing skills, all of which can be transferred across subjects and be of aid with extended pieces of coursework, assignments and examinations alike. I assist regularly both at and outside of Cambridge with a wide variety of academic, critical and creative pieces of work (including the occasional PhD dissertation; numerous academic manuscripts, editorial and publishing briefs; MA dissertations and papers; BA dissertations, papers, portfolios and assignments; A-Level EPQs; IB EEs; NEAs; and more — including within disciplines that do not immediately seem especially related to my own, with essential academic skills being, after all, highly transferable!).

من أنا؟
Over the past couple of years at Cambridge, I have specialised in English, undertaking a PhD and an MPhil (with Distinction). Prior to this, I completed a BA Hons in comparative European literatures, linguistics and languages at Utrecht University (summa cum laude, equivalent to Double First Class with Distinction), which also included internships at the Universities of Sheffield and Heidelberg, where I worked on archives in English, German and Dutch. Ever since, in addition to literary and linguistic studies, I have regularly also crossed into art, history, politics, philosophy, and related disciplines, including as part of editorial roles at Cambridge University Press, Edinburgh University Press and Amsterdam University Press.
What I Do:
At Cambridge, in addition to my own postgraduate research, I have provided instruction and dissertation supervision to a number of first- through to final-year undergraduate students (predominantly in English Studies, but also extending into Comparative Studies), as well as assisted with assessing and moderating applicant entrance examinations and interviews (especially the CELAT and CMLAT). Outside of the Cambridge supervision system, I have additionally also taught and assessed a number of independent adult, postgraduate, undergraduate and secondary school students through various educational initiatives (such as the Cambridge Summer Schools, Friends of Youth and Sutton Trust). Privately, I offer individually tailored tuition, as well as aid with critical, analytical, reading and writing skills through a number of platforms like this one (among them First Tutors).
What I Offer:
As my work is cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural, I can offer individually tailored lessons within a number of subjects in the arts and humanities, along with aid with critical reading, analysis, and writing skills. For those interested in university-level instruction, my postgraduate specialism is in English language, literature, and related cultural, social and political contexts of the modern and contemporary periods (that is, 1830–Present), so I can teach within these areas up to especially advanced levels (including for MA and BA dissertations). For those interested in less specialised university-level instruction, or earlier stages of education, I can also offer assistance within all areas I have a postgraduate and/or undergraduate background in, including additional periods of English (specifically 1500–1830), Germanic and Slavonic Studies (especially 1830–Present, but also 1500–1830), and areas within political, social and cultural studies, philosophy, and history (all potentially up to BA level, depending on the particulars of the course). Because academic skills are so transferable across the humanities, and because my own background is so cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary, over the years, I have been able to assist students in lots of diverse disciplines (including those reading for degrees that do not immediately seem especially related to my own, among them Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford, International Relations at UCL, and Law at LSE).

I am also perhaps more capable than most of assisting students from educational backgrounds outside of the UK in adapting to the UK context (having, at this point, been educated across four different educational systems, including the British, which is quite unique in the European context; the German, which is more prototypical of European approaches; and the Dutch, which has served as the foundation for and still has much in common with the American 'Liberal Arts' approach).
Apart from subject- and skills-based instruction, I can also offer help with applications (including to university, school and scholarship programmes) and examination and interview preparation (including for Oxbridge, RG, Ivy League, LERU, and other competitive institutions), having had experience not only marking entrance examinations and interviews, but also having had the entirety of my own studies fully funded through a number of competitive academic awards (including scholarships awarded by the Cambridge Trust, Le Bas Fund, Utrecht Trust, and others).
