I have been working as an actress and educator since 2012, and since 2015 I have devoted myself to the study and practice of Butoh dance and physical theatre. My journey in this field began at LUME Teatro, a renowned theatre group with over 40 years of history, where I studied and practised the methodology developed by Luís Otávio Burnier. In 2015, Butoh entered my life and profoundly transformed my understanding of art and existence. Through the work of Kazuo Ohno and Tatsumi Hijikata, I encountered the depth and expressive power of Butoh not only as an artistic language, but also as a way of life. Over time, what began as research has become a guiding philosophy, shaping how I perceive movement, presence, expression, and the human experience. Butoh is a Japanese dance form that emerged in the 1950s. It is a practice that works from the inside out, functioning as an active meditation and a process of self-knowledge. In Butoh, the body becomes an instrument of poetry, subjectivity, and transformation, inviting a deep immersion into one’s inner landscape. Within Butoh, there is the concept of ma, the space in between, referring to invisible and empty spaces where matter cannot be seen, yet which are filled with life and presence. This understanding resonates with aspects of Buddhist philosophy, offering a sensitive invitation to experience oneself, the surrounding space, nature, and life with greater awareness and openness.

From Aristotle to Derrida (the range is not comprehensive), literary theory has maintained that a poem's power is measured in its affect. Throughout this course, our goal will not be to make inscrutable poetic analysis - though the first part of the lesson will be spent analysing word choice, meter, line length and spaces of an English poem written between pre-modernism and postmodernism. Rather, through our perusal of poetic form we will be able to ground our work, somewhat modestly, in the English poetic tradition. Before the first class you will send me some of your own work so I know how to build or refine aesthetic temperament. I have been writing poetry for ten years and two years ago I published a chapbook at a press with competitive standards, and I am currently working on a full-length collection. If you wish to take up poetry seriously, time is needed and an eye for detail is essential. I look forward to us broadening our aesthetic sensibilities together.

Besiana helped me improve my writing and development as a poet by a lot in just a very short amount of time. It was always a very pleasant experience having lessons with her. She's very supportive and was always available for advice or any questions that I had and guided me in my writing journey even beyond the classes to help me get the best out of my work.
