Ciao! I have been teaching Italian for the past twelve years. I have taught privately and at language schools like La Scuola Italiana del Greenwich Village in New York and ItalCultura, the school of the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago. During the first few lessons I will make sure you have the tools to pronounce and identify all the sounds of the Italian language. This step is essential! And it will make everything easier afterwards. When I teach Italian I try to avoid all the things that I hated as a language student. We will use real songs, real literature, do real conversation and storytelling. When you are engaging all your senses it is easier to keep your mind relaxed and to remember new words.

I will customize my materials to your interests, needs and desired pace. And because you are learning from a native Italian you will also learn about Italian culture and history. You will absorb a way of thinking, not just grammar rules.

I speak a bunch of languages so I know a thing or two about how tedious language classes can be. My terrifying French teacher in middle school made us repeat the same fake dialogue from a really bad book ad nauseam, over and over and over again. Some of those dialogues are carved in my brain: “Bonjour, je m’appelle Richard Drapeau, je viens du Canada, je suis Canadien...”

When I teach Italian I try to avoid all the things that I hated as a language student. We will use real songs, real literature, do real conversation and storytelling and we will go on “talking walks” because when you are engaging all your senses it is easier to keep your mind relaxed and to remember new words.

I hold a degree in Lingue e Letterature Straniere (Foreign Languages and Literatures) from Università Roma Tre (equivalent to an American MA) and a Master’s of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts and Media from Columbia College Chicago. I wrote a thesis about translating a long epic poem by W. H. Auden and I tried to ride a horse across America.

I am currently a third year student in pre-med at Erasmus University College, and a second year in mechanical engineering at TU Delft. I am proficient in teaching in English and can explain stuff in Dutch, but at a slightly slower pace as it is my second language. I can essentially tutor all STEM subjects with a week's notice due to my coursework in almost all field but here is a list I am most comfortable with: Mathematics, Physics, Biology (not plant biology), Chemistry, Computer science (Matlab and Python), principles of engineering design (including SolidWorks) and Economics. My previous experience with teaching is both at a university level as an education and research assistant for Behavioural Economics, and as a part-time high school teacher for biology and Mathematics.
In my free time, I like to play tennis and grab a drink with my friends – I am extremely compassionate, but I value my time and hope that you can match my enthusiasm in class. I did the IB program in high school and scored a 42.

I would love to help you on this adventure of learning the Portuguese language.
I’m fluent in teaching both bacalhau Portuguese and caipirinha Portuguese (PT & BR). I’m deeply involved with both cultures.

My classes are tailored to meet the needs of my students. I have the experience and skills to offer conversation lessons and/or more structured classes focused on grammar.

I have been teaching at the Una Paloma Blanca language school in Rotterdam since 2020.

Here, I had the chance to really develop my teaching craft, working with many different students, each with their own needs and reasons for learning Portuguese. I had the opportunity to teach both European and Brazilian Portuguese to individual and group classes.

In addition to this work, I also provided private lessons to some students who needed preparation before moving to Brazil or Portugal.
