En estos tiempos neurodivergentes, la división binaria de "una o dos lenguas" en los bilingües quizás deba ser objeto de cierta controversia, que los estudiantes son capaces de ofrecer. Siempre he encontrado que los modelos de producción bilingüe (y las omnipresentes diapositivas de PowerPoint) representan un obstáculo para los profesores universitarios debido a su falta de claridad y discusión; simplemente no son identificables tal como se presentan ni brindan mucha información o ejemplos para estudiantes monolingües.

El cambio de código, un subproducto del bilingüismo, es ahora un término que se encuentra incluso en los grafitis de barrios de minorías étnicas ("¿pueden los blancos cambiar de código?", un ejemplo encontrado). Op de basis- en midelbare school had ik veel vriendinnen om mij heen die moeite hadden met specifieke vakken, waar ik geen moeite mee had. Ook kwam dit andersom voor. Het fijne was om elkaar dan te kunnen helpen hiermee. Wanneer dit niet kon kregen wij bijles van een fijne coach en dit hielp ons stuk voor stuk ons examen halen.
