يتكون الكلام من كلمات ، والكلمة تنقسم إلى ثلاثة أقسام هي : الاسم ، والفعل ، والحرف .
1 - فالاسم : هو مايدل على شيءٍ يُدرَك بالحواس ، وليس الزمن جزءًا منه ، مثل :
ولد - قِط - ورْد - نهْر
أو هو ما يدل على شيءٍ يدرك بالعقل ، وليس الزمن جزءًا منه ، مثل :
عِلْم - عَدْل - نظام
2 - والفعل : هو ما يدل على حدوث شيءٍ ، والزمن جزء منه ( أي في زمن ما ماضٍ ، أو حاضر ، أو مستقبل ) مثل :
شَكَر - يُتْقِن - اسْتَقِم
3 - والحرف : مايدل على معنى غير مستقل بالفهم ، بل يظهر من وضع الحرف مع غيره في الكلام ، ( أي أنه لايعطي معنىً إلا إذا وضع مع اسمٍ أو فعل ) مثل :
مِنْ - هَلْ - لَمْ - أَوْ
أما الخطوة التالية فستكون كيف نميز الكلمة ونصنفها بناءًا على علامات الاسم ، وعلامات الفعل .
