Lesson Overview Who: Johannes – Brand owner and Central Saint Martins graduate with experience in celebrity dressing and industry experience in luxury couture houses Techniques & methodology: Practice-led, studio-based teaching combining draping on the body, pattern making, sewing, and portfolio development, tailored to individual goals Lesson length: Typically 90 minutes, allowing time for hands-on making, discussion, and feedback Who the lessons are for: Students aged 16+, including foundation, BA, and MA applicants, as well as early-career designers seeking portfolio refinement or industry insight Languages: English and German Focus: University applications, professional portfolios, technical development, and understanding industry expectations I am the founder of the fashion brand Johannes and an actively practising designer, bringing an industry-focused approach to teaching. I support students in developing strong, competitive portfolios for university applications and professional roles, with clear guidance on concept development, editing, and presentation aligned with current academic and industry expectations. My professional work includes designing and dressing international artists such as Björk, Lady Gaga, Grimes, Kylie Jenner, Megan Thee Stallion, Rina Sawayama, and Post Malone for performances, editorials, and public appearances. This experience gives students direct insight into professional standards, timelines, and the realities of working under pressure within the fashion industry. My technical foundation is shaped by experience in couture and luxury fashion environments including Viktor&Rolf, Givenchy, Balmain, and bespoke tailoring ateliers. My teaching covers draping, pattern making, sewing, and hand-based construction techniques, with a strong focus on fit, proportion, and translating ideas into technically resolved garments. I offer targeted guidance on what universities are looking for at foundation, BA, and MA level: from creative curiosity and process at foundation stage, to technical skill, concept development, and visual clarity at BA level, through to research depth, authorship, and critical positioning at MA level. I work closely with students to ensure their portfolios clearly communicate both creative identity and readiness for academic or professional progression. I am fluent in German and, with formal training in painting, can also support students in developing visual research, composition, and fine art–led portfolio work where relevant.

Sofie - Amsterdam$69
Trusted teacher: Don't want to just throw away your beloved broken or ill-fitting clothes? But can't figure it out yourself? With a few simple steps, they get a well-deserved second life, and often without a sewing machine! Repairing and altering clothes is wonderfully sustainable, good for your wallet, and also wonderfully zen to do. What are you learning? We will work specifically on the garments that you bring yourself and/or the techniques that you want to learn yourself. Taking into account the time and your own possibilities/sewing level, we will try to make your clothing wearable again. You will receive personal advice and learn specific techniques to tackle the problems with the clothing you brought. You will also learn about materials and tools that you can use to repair and adjust clothing. At the end of the lesson, you will have made one or more garments wearable again and learned a lot of techniques that you can continue to apply at home on broken and ill-fitting garments. If you choose to book a series of multiple lessons, I can offer you a full clothing repair course, covering as many clothing repair techniques as possible. At the end of each lesson you will receive a handout to take home, which explains the techniques again. What are you bringing? Clothing with torn seams or loose hems, stains, holes, tears, broken zippers, missing buttons or hooks. Clothing that is too big or too small in the waist, too long or too short in the hem, etc. If you have some sewing supplies at home, you can bring them along: needles, pins, thread, scissors, tape measure and seam ripper. If you don't have any, don't worry, all the necessary tools are available. And if you want to continue working at home, you can buy a Mending Kit from the teacher on the spot. There are also (vintage) haberdashery and materials for sale.

We had highly informative, engaging, and inspiring lessons with Nancy. We started with fashion illustrations and the intricacies of technical drawing, then progressed to deep discussions about brand identity and the creative process. We also explored collection creation, along with the business and marketing aspects of a fashion company. I was pleasantly surprised by Nancy’s depth of highly practical and applicable knowledge, as well as the expertise she possesses in both fashion and marketing. I am looking forward to our future lessons and continuing to learn from her. I highly recommend Nancy as a very talented, friendly, and professional teacher.

Fleur

Fleur surpassed expectations! In such a short span of time, she taught my 12-year-old how to draw croquis, conceptualize a collection, draping, and pattern-making. She then helped my daughter bring a dress design to fruition, from visiting a fabric store to select muslin, the right material and trims to sewing the garment to completion. Her patience and kindness every step of the way made my daughter feel comfortable and confident as she learned new skills. Fleur was always on time, very accommodating with her schedule and helped to make our visit in Paris a truly unique and memorable one.
