I teach German to beginners, who would like to improve their speech, writing and general apprehension of the German language.
Maybe you are moving to Germany and don't know where to begin (as was the case with me 3 years ago!), or you are planning a holiday and would like to communicate successfully. Maybe you are preparing for an exam, or are simply interested by the language and would like to learn more. Whatever the case, I would be delighted to help!

Lessons will focus on a variety of topics, geared towards your language learning goal. This will prodominantly include grammar - the four cases, sentence structure, conjugation, etc. - vocabulary, and conversational work. I also have experience with phonetics and German diction, which I studied as part of my university degree. I can therefore assist you with correct pronunciation. I have several course materials through which we can work. These would take us thematically through topics such as culture, careers, hobbies and many more. I can also offer general conversational practice, if you are looking to practice and boost already acquired skills.

My lessons are always tailored to my students needs, and I aim to create a friendly and inspiring atmosphere. I believe above all that learning should be fun, relaxed, and move at a pace that you find both invigorating and enjoyable!

If you want to work through one of my advised course books, then you would preferably order a copy for yourself. If you already know what material you want to work through, please let me know so that I have time to acquire it prior to lessons. This can be discussed during the lesson.
Otherwise, just a pen and paper to take notes!

About Me

I am a British Soprano with a Bachelor degree in vocal performance and a passion for all things art and culture. I love reading, cooking (eating), and practicing yoga. A teacher of two years experience, I have enjoyed understanding how students learn, and seeing them grow in both ability and confidence within their respective subjects.

During my Bachelor degree, I gained a deep understanding of vocal technique - learning how my voice worked and what 'healthy singing' means. In this time I also studied phonetics, correct diction in Italian, German and French, Alexander technique, acting and body movement. I have an extensive repertoire, from baroque to modern music, and have performed many times both as a soloist and as a chorus member.

I have lived in Germany for two years, learning the language from scratch, and plan to enrol in a master degree (Music) in September. Learning German from a beginner to an advanced level has further deepened my interest in languages and helped me to develop further tools for teaching. I have taught English as a foreign language for over two years, and enjoy working with a variety of students at different levels. Helping people reach their language goal is just as interesting and engaging for me as I hope it is for them! I have subsequently begun teaching German to beginners up to B1/A-level.

My approach to all teaching is very versatile. I aim to create a lesson style that suits my student and supports their individual needs in an inspiring and friendly environment. I believe that learning should be fun, relaxed, and move at a pace that you find both invigorating and enjoyable!

Learning a foreign language is not a linear process that consists of memorising a list of words, and speaking a foreign language is not an oral translation exercise.

There are two types of approaches to acquiring knowledge:

When asked what year follows 1999, you can immediately answer 2000 without having to think for a long time and, above all, without having memorised each number individually, starting with 1, 2, 3 ... You know that numbers are formed according to a certain pattern. With only ten digits, you can form an infinite number of numbers and always know which number comes next.

When it comes to the alphabet, words and sentences, it's more or less the same, but school pedagogy, school textbooks and regular lessons still follow the rote learning approach. In the lessons I propose, you will learn to use patterns because this is more efficient and faster.
