Présentation
I am a humanities and arts enthusiast who loves to teach and share my passions with others. My personal background is in Liberal Arts at Bristol where my focus was in English Literature, History, French and Media. During this time I also spent a year studying abroad in Uppsala, Sweden where I studied comparative literature, history and languages. At Glasgow I studied Art History. I enjoy the variety offered by interdisciplinary study of the Humanities.
Throughout my education and professional experiences, I have often found myself teaching. I have worked as a dance teacher for young children and adults, a summer school instructor for children and teenagers, and a GCSE tutor. In each instance, I have always enjoyed getting to know the students in order to decipher which methods of teaching will be most appropriate for each individual in order to achieve their learning and assessment objectives. I thrive when I am able to adapt my teaching to different students’ needs in order to assure their success and confidence in the subject. Since pursuing my level 5 TEFL qualification, I have learned that this adaptability with my teaching strategies will be essential, especially for students speaking English as a second language. Another consistency I’ve found in my education and work is that I’ve often been part of an international community, with people of many different nationalities and language backgrounds. As a result, colleagues and classmates often ask for my assistance in English pronunciation, spelling and proofreading; whether this be checking the grammar and vocabulary of a text, a professional email, or a university essay. In these situations I’ve always been excited to determine the best way to explain a concept or rule of English to a second language speaker, and to offer them support and confidence in improving their English proficiency and academic writing abilities.
Having tutored GCSE students over the past academic year, I understand the importance of teaching students to follow assessment criteria and exam specifications in a manner which feels engaging and helps them develop a passion for their subjects. I am confident in assessing a student’s strengths and weaknesses in their class work, revision notes and practice assessments, and constructing study plans to best support them and help them improve their input and grades. Some students, for example, may have effective revision skills, but may not be focusing on content relevant to their exams; while others struggle to strike a balance between demonstrating their factual knowledge and analytical abilities in essay-centric subjects. I enjoy identifying these differences between each student and customising my teaching in order to help them overcome these struggles. My focus on English Language, Literature and History throughout my GCSEs, A Levels, Undergraduate and Postgraduate degrees, and Extended Project Qualification has refined my skills in essay writing. I enjoy planning, structuring and proofreading essays, as well as researching, referencing, drafting and editing coursework. I am eager to pass these skills onto my students in order to make the essay writing process more accessible and enjoyable, and to give them confidence as they progress further in their education.
I am looking forward to creating lesson plans which will create a suitable balance of studying factual course content, developing a student’s analytical abilities, and their skills in communicating their own ideas and interpretations of the course material. I am confident in teaching all exam boards of GCSE, IGCSE and A-Level English Language, Literature and History.
