Learning modern Greek gives you understanding in ancient Greek as well, and a lot of international words that have an ancient Greek root. A total beginner typically needs 3-4 years of 2-hour weekly lessons to be able to communicate on an intermediate level of B1. Trips to Greece and contact with people that speak the language help greatly to gain a quicker pace of learning.
