Within these classes we will cover a range of essential skills that will help with academic life and completing assignments successfully such as: essay writing, researching, reading techniques, referencing, presentation skills, time management and any other aspects of academic life that you feel you need help or support with.

I am a lecturer at the University of Sussex in Global Studies. I have a PhD in identity studies, an MA in Cultural and Critical Theory and a BA (hons) in Humanities. I have a PGCE teaching degree and over 10 years of teaching experience from Access to undergraduate levels.

To achieve your goals, I offer you a holistic approach to public speaking because, to convey a message, form and content are intimately linked.

After a few sessions, you will feel more confident, more convincing. Your interlocutors will be more attentive to the information you want to transmit. Your voice will stay clear longer. Through stress management, you will feel a great boost of energy and concentration.

Regarding the form, we will work in particular, the posture, the breathing, the modulation of the voice, the volume, the height, the intonation, and also the eye contact, the gestures, the pauses, in short, what one calls the "non-verbal". We will also see the elements that take precedence during a presentation or an exchange on the Internet.

And, if it helps, we'll see the different ways to handle your stress. We will establish your profile to choose the tools that suit you best.

Explore Public Speaking through...

Intonation and Melody

When training for a presentation, decide which words and passages deserve extra attention and increase the tone to emphasize these points. If something sounds exaggerated or false, your audience can turn against you.

Volume

A speech is not ordinary conversation, and a presenter can’t convey passion and enthusiasm if the words are delivered softly.

Clarity

Don’t forget to articulate every word, to ensure clarity on your part and understanding on the part of the audience.

Emphasis

Even in the same sentence, emphasizing different words can change the focus of a message. Changing emphasis can alter meaning and/or implication.

Pauses

when pauses are placed in strategic spots in a speech, they can make the difference between a good and an excellent presentation. There are several purposes for which pauses can be used: to give listeners a chance to absorb something that’s just been said; to generate expectations about something that’s going to be said...

Pacing & Tone

If you often get negative feedback about the faster or slower delivery of your speeches, practice delivering a speech sometimes faster and sometimes slower, so you can arrive at a natural pace.

Can you get the audience's attention if they take out their phones? Do you feel nervous when presenting at work? Do you modulate your voice enough and use your body to communicate passion and professionalism?

I will help you prepare your presentation and train you to say it with confidence in 3 sessions. You will improve your stage presence, your non-verbal communication on video and, most importantly, what makes you most nervous: your connection with the audience. You'll improvise and prepare, and we'll add some humor and parts where you'll engage with the audience. You will learn that it is normal to be nervous, because as humans we fear rejection and public speaking threatens our safety. Once you understand that your fear is normal and we explore the "worst case scenario", you will start to enjoy the presentation because you will focus on the audience's experience and you can be sure that your content is good enough that they will not be afraid. throw tomatoes for a bad performance.
