I have years of experience with ESL and have taken multiple courses training myself in the best ways to tutor in ESL. I am happy to teach all ages. I currently teach several adults and numerous younger students. I specialize in students who have recently moved to the Netherlands and have little to no experience with English. I apply a hybrid method of ESL and school curriculum. After working for four years as a private tutor in Amsterdam for numerous international families, I have discovered a love for teaching Adult ESL. My goal is to not only to teach ESL tailored to life in the Netherlands, but to also offer advice and support to expat adults around life in Amsterdam. I currently work with the parents of many of my students who wish to improve their English. I am a former primary school teacher (International School of Choueifat-Dubai) who now works exclusively as a private tutor. My students are mainly expats, though I also do have several local Dutch students. Having moved around quite a bit, I understand the stress families undergo adapting to a new school system. After four year in Amsterdam, I also now understand the unique stress parents also endure adapting to Dutch culture and regular use of the English language. My teaching methods focus on improving Adult ESL that is tailored specifically to life in the Netherlands. I design my teaching plans, with my students, to cover the most essential aspects of English that are needed to navigate life in Amsterdam. Moreover, I have a deep understanding of how English in the Netherlands differs from conversational English in other countries. I have a grasp of the nuances of both languages and the areas which pose particular difficulty. I really enjoy the motivation of my adult students and the unique friendships I have formed through teaching. I know how isolated some parents who are neither native English nor Dutch speakers feel when moving to Amsterdam. After tutoring for over 6 years in the Amsterdam area, I am very familiar with the various school curriculums. Having moved around quite a bit, I understand the stress students undergo adapting to new schooling systems. I enjoy working privately with students to build their confidence. I previously was a primary school teacher of all subjects (Grades 1&2) for a private international school in Dubai. I am familiar with international school curriculum and challenges faced by students when moving to a new country. I have extensive experience with students of all learning levels. I have been privately tutoring for over 10 years now. English is my first language (I am American). I also have experience tutoring at a higher age (as well as university level). I am an excellent writer, editor, and researcher and work part time in UVA's graduate school in the sociology department. I completed my MSc at UVA and undergraduate at UCLA. Currently, the majority of my students are primary school students who attend the British school or ISA. However, I teach a large number of international school students or older students. I also tutor many students, of various ages, in the Dutch schooling system. I am very comfortable with international school curriculums, however, I also have a good grasp on the Dutch schooling system.
