A new approach to Mandolin and Ukulele - Accompanying, improvising and understanding music in a practical way.

Big music from small instruments.

Mandolin and Ukulele have been quite a hype in the past 10 years. Nevertheless, these two small ones are not often used up to their full potential. Have you ever thought you could be a virtuoso in one of these instruments? That you could actually play in any style and be a great soloist as much as a violinist or a guitarist?

Aside from learning the basics, I will show alternative tunings that will provide you with a better sound, a bigger range to play in, more versatility and comfort for the hand, awesome voicings and a clear visual map of chords, modes, and harmonic movements. I will help you to rethink the mandolin and the ukulele as truly complete and professional instruments and show you how to play on them in a broad variety of styles such as folk, blues, pop, rock, and jazz.
[According to the style we will also be working with loops and effects.]

This class is meant to guide you from the very first steps on your instrument up to a professional level. From beginners to advanced musicians who want to challenge themselves and enlarge their perspective on the instrument.

The lessons will be custom made for each student.
I will work to adapt to your learning rhythm while keeping you challenged at the same time. You will receive regular feedback, advice, and guidance and materials

Don't hesitate to contact me for more details!

Acerca de mí
My name is Cristiano, I come from Italy, I am 33 years old and I currently live and work in The Hague where I teach since 2016 several courses at The Royal Conservatory.
I am a multi-instrumentalist, composer, music theorist and educator with a passion for improvised music.

I have benefited from a unique musical education, quickly embracing different styles in addition to my classical foundations. After seven years of instrumental training (violin, guitar, singing), I decided to fully commit to jazz and improvised music and then moved in France to study under the guidance of Didier Lockwood and other outstanding musicians. Since then I have committed my life to music and music education.

My experiences, traveling and studying with great performers from all over the world, have had a radical impact on my pedagogy. Teaching music is an essential element of my musical career and development as I believe that to inspire music in others I need to keep being inspired myself; in fact, teaching provides me with an extra reason to be the best musician I can. I believe that there is no other art form so inherently “dialogical” as music, no other that demands so much cooperation.

"Music is not a thing at all but an activity, something that people do. [ ... ] It is not true, as is often said, that music is the most abstract of the arts. On the contrary, music is to take part in the most concrete and least mediated of all artistic activities. [ ... ] How we like to music is who we are" (from Cristopher Small, Musicking, 1998)

Hope to share my passion for music with you in one of my classes!

Employing the voice in a rhythmical sense is not a granted or obvious approach for singers and is sometimes overlooked by instrumentalists. However, a rhythmical foundation developed through the voice is a core element of strong musicianship for everyone in the music sector.

In these lessons, we will practice rhythm through the understanding and utilization of Konnakol (South Indian Carnatic rhythmical solfege) alongside other techniques and approach different ways to conceive of rhythm and integrate it into performance.

We will work on rhythmical freedom, phrasing, grouping and moving patterns, cross-rhythms, odd measures and different 'feels'. You will acquire new ideas, improve your timing, gain independence in your lines and obtain a set of tools to practice self-sufficiently.

"Rhythm through Voice" is designed for both singers and instrumentalists who want to enlarge their spectrum of techniques, and improve their rhythmical awareness.

[For instrumentalists: I will support you to translate and apply these techniques into your instrument]

The lessons will be custom made for each student.
I will work to adapt to your learning rhythm while keeping you challenged at the same time. You will receive regular feedback, advice, and guidance.

What is music theory? Is it just one theory? What do we do with it? How come so many of the greatest musicians didn't know even the name of the notes?

Let's dispel the myth.
They may, in fact, have lacked the names, but "knowing" in music means something else than a dusty stockpile of information and labels. Their ears, their voice, and their hands "knew" very well...

Music theory is the way we get some order into the endless realm of possibility that music allows us. Naming and conceptualizing these possibilities is very useful in many ways. It provides us with an overarching and abstract understanding of what we have done (reflective element), and it can even open up to yet unheard sound combinations (generative element). But one point remains crucial: music theories come from music practice and come back to music practice. Theories are the most useful and loyal servants for music-making, but only empty speculations without it.

In these lessons, I will help you to understand how to navigate music theories and what to do with them. I will show you a plurality of approaches to systematizing sound relations that will serve at best the music you love to play or want to compose.

The lessons will be custom made for each student.
Whether you are a beginner who simply wants a little help to get the basics right or you are a cultivated musician fond of music theory who wants to explore advanced and complex concepts out of the box, I will provide you with ideas, materials, and exercises. I will work to adapt to your learning rhythm while keeping you challenged at the same time. You will receive regular feedback, advice, and guidance

I started playing the piano when I was 8 years old. By that time I already could feel I would become a professional musician and teacher. I got my first bachelor in piano in 2007. When I was 13 years old, I started having harpsichord lessons and expanding my knowledge of classical and early music. In 2012 I got my bachelor degree in harpsichord and in 2014 my master degree at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague. Currently, I’m working with my ensemble, teaching piano and harpsichord, and am now doing my Ph.D. in Performative Arts at Leiden University

I absolutely love to teach and pass my experience as a musician to my students on both instruments. I like to see them improving and have fun while playing.
I work with several ways of teaching, depending on the student level and music background.

Normally I work with piano methods with kids from 9 -12 years old. I can teach music theory if necessary and if it will improve the student’s needs to progress and reach their goals, I do that with pleasure. Harmony and a bit of keyboard improvisation are also very welcome to the class.

My specialty is classical music, more specifically, baroque music, although I have notions of pop, jazz, and improvisation. Because I have sporting and personal training backgrounds, I’m specialized also on correcting postures and eventually avoid or solve pain issues when regarding playing.

Music is Play! and everyone is its own game.
Understand and make only the music you like. If it isn't fun, it can't be music!

I studied a classical piano bachelor, and later a jazz master and a live electronics master. In the meantime, I have been teaching music and playing synths, drum machines, and computers. It's longer than 5 years now!
Electronic music is a very vast world. The possibilities are endless. But do you need to learn everything, or only what interests you to make the music you want to do? From listening and analyzing a song you like, we will go through the necessary knowledge for you to achieve it:
- What do you need to build your home studio in order to create something similar?
- Which instruments (or plugins) are being used.
- Whether or not a knowledge of music theory is necessary.
- And in which different ways / through which paths could you achieve something like what you desire?

At the same time that we analyze and learn, you are also going to be encouraged to create! Practice makes the master, and the more you create, the more familiar you'll be with the tools and the environments that we learn in class. A part of the class is also going to be dedicated to listening to what you created and going through different ways we may improve it.

For people interested in live electronics (live-processing an acoustic instrument or programming live sets), I also have knowledge of Max MSP and I can teach the basics or help you program any kind of device you propose.

PD: I have also experienced imparting piano lessons, which is also a very important part of my professional practice. In case you are interested, it is also possible to mix the two worlds and create any kind of path between piano, synths, beats, and home studio techniques.

Ask me anything, I'll tell you how I could help!

Hello everyone, I'm Enrico and I come from Italy. Right now I am in Utrecht where I am doing a master's degree in cello under the guidance of Timora Rosler.
During my years of studies I always had the possibility to teach music, in fact while I was doing my Bachelor in Italy at the Conservatory of Turin, I taught cello and music theory in a private music school called "Isla de Musiqueros", in this school I had the opportunity to teach people of all ages, including children under 4 years old.
When I moved to the Netherlands little by little I started to find students and many many concerts.

I believe that playing is the best way to have fun and express your emotions, the work I want to do is work on tensions and try to help you melt away while playing, in this way you can have more sound and feel more free.
Technique is also very important in the everyday life of a musician, together we can see the best exercises for you, to help you improve and have more confidence with the instrument.

Hello! I am Patricia, double bass, electric bass and baby bass player from Spain and live in Vlaardingen (Netherlands).

I have studied up to Dutch A2 level, so I can have basic conversations and teach Dutch at a basic level. We can also have lessons in English, Spanish or Catalan.

I studied the bachelor's degree at the jazz department in Codarts and also the master's degree in Codarts (but in the Latin department). In addition, I took an extra course during my bachelor studies to learn lessons (I have an official certificate).

I have a lot of experience playing all over the world with many different bands and orchestras, such as in the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Colombia and Mexico with electric bass, double bass and Baby bass (electric double bass).

As a music teacher, I have 4 years of experience teaching children, teenagers and adults of different levels.

As a bass teacher, I always tailor my lessons to the student from day one, asking about your music preferences and which tunes you want to play. Music theory if you want to improve as a musician, but I also understand that it can be boring, that's why from the first lesson you will learn theory while playing your favorite songs. I will adjust the program for you.

I can also give you tips about bass amplifiers, music software, etc., because I also studied sound engineering and worked as a sound engineer for many years.

The most important thing for me as a teacher is that you learn and at the same time have fun playing your instrument and improve yourself as a musician!

Hello everyone!

My musical journey began when I was just four years old, starting with the piano. Later, at the age of seven, I eagerly embraced the violin, adding its enchanting melodies to my repertoire.

I achieved a professional mid-grade in both piano and violin. Fueled by my love for music, I moved to Rotterdam, Netherlands, to pursue a Bachelor's degree at Codarts University of Arts. Under the guidance of teachers like Natasha Morozova and Hed Yaron Meyerson, I refined my skills and nurtured my artistic vision.

After completing my Bachelor's studies, I continued my musical exploration in Codarts' Master's program. Alongside my classical training, I've always been intrigued by the therapeutic potential of music. In 2023, I earned certification in Music Therapy, expanding my horizons and deepening my connection to the healing power of music.

In collaboration with my colleagues, I am member of the Olga Trio. Our mission is to highlight the works of women composers throughout history. Our debut performance at the IV Concurso Nacional de Interpretación de Obras de Mujeres Compositoras was a proud moment, affirming our commitment to amplifying diverse voices in music.

Beyond classical music, I've always been drawn to exploring different genres and styles. As a member of the Jong Metropole Orchestra in 2023, I relished the opportunity to collaborate with musicians from diverse backgrounds, pushing the boundaries of traditional musical conventions.

In every note I play and every project I undertake, my passion for music shines through. It's a journey of exploration, growth, and discovery, and I'm excited to continue sharing my love for music with the world.

I've been teaching during the last 8 years. I am flexible with the students needs and I embrace fun and creativity in my lessons.

Teaching music and sharing my knowledge and approach to it has been something i've been drawn to all my life. I believe that every student deserves an individual way of explaining and practicing different ideas suitable for their own experience and personality.

I am extremely grateful for the opportunity that I had growing up of being taught by some of the most respected music pedagogues in Spain and am very excited to be able to share with other people, regardless of the scope of their expectations within music.
