La Higiene Industrial I es la disciplina preventiva que estudia las condiciones del medio ambiente de trabajo, identificando, evaluando y controlando los contaminantes de origen laboral. Para evitar que se produzca un daño a la salud. Puede definirse como la técnica no médica de prevención de enfermedades profesionales.
Las actividades productivas en general utilizan para su producción sustancias químicas, biológicas y/o energía (físicas). Al someterlas a procesos de manufacturado estas expulsan subproductos y residuos al medio ambiente laboral, que en muchos casos son tóxicos para los trabajadores. Para minimizar estos riesgos o eliminarlos interviene la Higiene Industrial, mediante técnicas que les permitan identificar los agentes presentes en dicho medio ambiente, conocer el modo en el que están emergiendo, su concentración en el aire y su toxicidad.
Un medio ambiente insano es un potencial daño para la salud de los trabajadores, que mantenido en el tiempo va a producir enfermedades relacionadas con el trabajo (que podrán ser en realidad Enfermedades Profesionales) en los trabajadores, y efectos sobre el medio ambiente circundante a la empresa y los vecinos de la zona.
