En estos tiempos neurodivergentes, la división binaria de "una o dos lenguas" en los bilingües quizás deba ser objeto de cierta controversia, que los estudiantes son capaces de ofrecer. Siempre he encontrado que los modelos de producción bilingüe (y las omnipresentes diapositivas de PowerPoint) representan un obstáculo para los profesores universitarios debido a su falta de claridad y discusión; simplemente no son identificables tal como se presentan ni brindan mucha información o ejemplos para estudiantes monolingües.

El cambio de código, un subproducto del bilingüismo, es ahora un término que se encuentra incluso en los grafitis de barrios de minorías étnicas ("¿pueden los blancos cambiar de código?", un ejemplo encontrado). Tenga en cuenta que este es un término lingüístico que se utiliza para cambiar entre dos idiomas y no entre variedades locales o sociales de inglés.

Para este curso (muy popular en universidades de toda Europa, tanto a nivel de pregrado como de posgrado), repasaremos en detalle los términos utilizados para discutir el bilingüismo y luego discutiremos, con la ayuda de libros y artículos publicados, quién puede considerarse bilingüe ( ¿O somos todos otra lengua latente?). ¿Puede el bilingüismo ser definido por el hablante, en lugar de por la "comunidad"? ¿Puede ser impuesto por el Estado? ¿Funciona un cerebro bilingüe de la misma manera que un cerebro monolingüe?
