I will teach the basis of poetry including different types of poems, why they are used, and how to effectively write a poem. Classes will be both analyses of famous poetry and the creation of your own pieces. I will ask students to bring poems they enjoy to the class occasionally so that I can keep them interested.
This class is perfect for everyone from absolute beginners to novice poets.

I am a 21 year old student who was a London poetry champion. Poetry has always been something I am extremely passionate about and if I can pass that passion on then I know I have been successful in my endeavours here. I have experience helping to teach classes from Sixth Form when I often helped cover lessons that didn't have any teachers. Learning is adaptable to each student as I know that different students work in different ways. I, myself, learn by doing but I know that not everyone does so please tell me how you learn best and we will work out how I can best support that. I look forward to meeting you.

I am currently in my final of 3 years studying Creative and Professional Writing at Leeds Trinity University. In my first and second years, my final grade was a first-class, the highest grade you can get.

This includes those who want to write creatively as well as people who need to improve their academic or business writing skills.

In the modern world, the significance of poetry is overlooked. From Aristotle to Derrida (the range is not comprehensive), literary theory has maintained that a poem's power is measured in its affect. Throughout this course, our goal will not be to make inscrutable poetic analysis - though the first part of the lesson will be spent analysing word choice, meter, line length and spaces of an English poem written between pre-modernism and postmodernism. Rather, through our perusal of poetic form we will be able to ground our work, somewhat modestly, in the English poetic tradition.

Before the first class you will send me some of your own work so I know how to build or refine aesthetic temperament. I have been writing poetry for ten years and two years ago I published a chapbook at a press with competitive standards, and I am currently working on a full-length collection. If you wish to take up poetry seriously, time is needed and an eye for detail is essential.

I look forward to us broadening our aesthetic sensibilities together.

Articles, books, columns, film scripts, press releases, radio spots, reviews, TV scripts and simply copywriting with SEO: most of us have tried to squeeze one or more of these types of writing out of the (virtual) pen. However, it is not always easy to deliver good texts. One person has great ideas, but cannot convert them into ink (digital or otherwise); the other is creative, but makes too many spelling mistakes; and a third kind of person is a language Nazi, but fails to come up with fluent, natural-feeling dialogue. The writing course from offers solace.

This way you can not only learn to act, but also get a taste of our courses in debate and presentation techniques (our TV course), communication, singing, improvisation, physical acting, lie detection, hypnosis, directing, or writing! Of course, it remains true: the more you follow one particular course, the faster you progress.

Our writing course

Our course covers all possible texts and can be followed both privately and in a small group. Moreover, we mainly teach you what you are interested in. During our first meeting we will discuss your goals in detail, after which we will focus the entire course on what you exactly want and need. All ages and levels are welcome with us, so we welcome you with open arms even if you have no experience at all or especially need tutoring!

About our coach

To be sure: our head coach is at home in all markets. He wrote his first book, the science fantasy Ice, the Lost Planet, when he was 11. The novel was published three years later, which earned Dirk his city's cultural merit prize and items on almost all national TV and radio stations, as well as articles in every leading newspaper and a large number of magazines. Dirk later also became the very first Flemish author whose books he himself had pinned in English were published by American publishers: Fates Worse than Death: Hunter by Vajra Enterprises and Baour, Strands of Death by BlackWyrm Publishing.

In between Dirk became a journalist. He wrote - or still writes - for 'fanzines', magazines, newspapers and websites such as Zita, Skynet, The Fighting Bard, Mandragon, Dreun, Mindview, Keys & Chords, Bello Magazine, De Zondag, Doorgelicht.be, MetalBorn, BeauSense Magazine, PDF'zines, GameJunks, Rpg.net, the Delta Gids, Cerberus, Cerberus Too, Cerberus Food & Lifestyle, Wellness Insight, Care Insight, Move On, Cult of Cool, Cult of Chic and Cult of Design. Thanks to his wide range of interests, he could go just about anywhere to write passionately about his favorite topics, but there is more.

Dirk wrote hundreds of press releases for PR agency Oskaar and later for his own PR agency, Badass PR - mainly for films, television series, the hospitality industry and various charities. He also provides numerous newsletters and social media for his clients.

Dirk has been a coach since he was twenty – when he was still studying psychology at the KUL – and has written several film and short film scripts as an acting teacher and screenwriter. Numerous radio spots have also rolled out of his brain. The most startling assignment, however, came when Modiphius Entertainment – the largest independent producer and distributor of role-playing games in the world – hired him to write the film script and audio play for Achtung! Cthulhu to write. They were so well received that he is currently reading the complete audio series of Achtung! Cthulhu is finishing. In addition, he is busy working on Iron Sky: The Roleplaying Game, which has been delayed considerably due to the fact that the second film was released much later than expected, production problems, the death of one of the two lead writers and the corona crisis. , but will be released next year at the largest role-playing convention in the world, Gen Con in Indianapolis.

Spoken word is a performing art between poetry and performance, leaving reason behind and discovering your creativity. I would love to teach you how to write poetry and spoken word pieces. First of all, we zoom in on the content: how do you translate your experiences, opinions, stories to paper, how do you go from idea to piece, and which writing techniques help you write? And we mainly get to work with fun assignments. From the content point of view, we then look at performance: how do you recite a piece, and how does it support what you want to say.

The purpose of this class is to get you (back to) writing. It doesn't matter if you're stuck or just getting started.

With simple generative writing prompts and exercises, I'll help you overcome your fear of the blank page and start writing. My goal is to help you "rest on the page" and get into a state of flow through techniques like freewriting, list-making, and word associations.

You can also receive individual feedback and support on your current or upcoming writing projects, along with helpful exercises that you can do at home, which we can then discuss.

The class can be taught in either English or Dutch.

Ilona (1992) lives and works in Brussels as a writer, poet, and photographer. Her work examines the fragile architecture of being human, paying particular attention to what hides at the edges of existence, in the shadow of shame. With a background in English literature, linguistics, and political science, she has worked as a writer and copywriter for a decade. Newspaper De Morgen praised her debut novel Donkerkiemer (Pelckmans Publishers, 2023) as ‘particularly cleverly composed' and 'psychologically and philosophically profound’. Themes such as ritual, memory, and loss, as well as a gentle rebellion against prevailing norms and systems, are central to her work. She is currently working on a second novel.

Thematic cycles of five sessions, each lasting three hours. Participants write based on instructions. At the end, all the texts are read (and discussed).
