About Me
My name is Stefan, and I am a German-born pianist with bachelor's and diploma degrees from the USA (Fort Worth and Minneapolis, respectively) and a postgraduate degree from Belgium (Antwerp). I have performed in the USA, Germany, France, Austria, Italy, Belgium, Estonia, and South Korea. Since my first year (2012) as a university music student, and to my initial surprise, I have been teaching and coaching my piano colleagues. What began as discussions about fingerings eventually evolved into full-blown coaching sessions, which helped them considerably. As a result, I have developed a professionally sufficient and mentally sound approach to piano teaching.
In most of my lessons, I work as a diagnostician. I try to determine exactly what is causing problems and then find the best possible solution for the student. I am nurturing, calm, kind, reasonable, and understanding, but I am also direct. I will do everything I can to help my students during the lesson, but I cannot practice for them. Once the student leaves the lesson, I am no longer responsible for what happens. Therefore, the student's improvement depends as much on the student's practice habits as on my teaching. I never expect quick results, but rather small, steady, and continuous improvements, since learning the piano is essentially like learning a language. No child has learned their native language in less than three years, and it is better to view piano as a skill that develops over time through practice, rather than something that only "talented" people can master.
