I have a TEFL certificate and a wide range of experience from teaching people English in Japan, as well as previous careers in Advertising and Finance. I have a love of the language and aim to help any student to improve their grasp of both grammar and the opportunity for them to communicate clearly and imaginatively. I engage my students through creativity, humour and a clearly structured lessons so that they enjoy themselves and make real progress in mastering the language. For Linguistics and Phonetics you will go through your university course assignments with me, we shall do "Chomskian trees" and we shall discuss theoretical points (eg GB theory, minimalist program). For Phonetics, IPA symbols and phonetic structures and theories (auto-segmental phonology and optimality theory). WARNING: there are many approaches to these theories, we shall go by what has been adopted at your university. Also: AI over-generates syntactic trees. They are not to be used for essays or to understand the underlying theories (right now, 2026).

English SL and Higher Level for the International Baccalaureate is a rigorous course, especially for ESL students. I completed the IB with HL English and received a 7 (highest mark) in my final exam. I will be able to go over both Standard Level and Higher Level syllabuses for the course specific to the material covered in your school, and prepare you for mock and final exams. I will include essay writing skills, literary criticism and analysis, as well as vocabulary expansion techniques in my teaching. A brief overview of the key features of English SL/HL as set by the International Baccalaureate Organisation:

• Higher level study requires a minimum of 240 class hours, while standard level study requires a minimum of 150 class hours
• Students study 13 works at higher level and 9 works at standard level from a representative selection of literary forms, periods and places
• Students develop the ability to engage in close, detailed analysis of literary works, building understanding of the techniques involved in literary criticism
• The study of literary works in context is emphasised, and through the study of literature in translation the student is challenged to reflect on the role of cultural assumptions in interpretation
• Students are assessed through a combination of formal examination and oral and written coursework.

• Students also perform an oral activity presenting their analysis of two works studied

I'm Italian. I studied Spanish starting from level A1 up to level C2, certified by the most prestigious organisation in the study and teaching of the Spanish language, the Instituto Cervantes.

I have been teaching Spanish classes online since 2018.

My lessons can be in Spanish only, from day one, if the student wants. I can use other languages to clear up particularly complicated doubts.
