Hello!

I am a professional recorder and flute player with a passion for both early and contemporary music, offering lessons on the recorder, flute, piano, and music theory in the Amsterdam area and online.

I graduated with a Masters in recorder at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam Cum Laude, with a scholarship from The Countess of Munster Musical Trust. Previously, I graduated from the Royal College of Music London with a First-Class Joint Honours Bachelor’s degree in Flute and Recorder. In 2021 I was a finalist for the Moeck/SRP recorder competition as part of the London Early Music Festival.

I am an encouraging and dedicated teacher who believes that effective practice, rather than talent, is at the heart of any musical development. I share my expertise in how to practice well, varying your approach to make different connections rather than just repeating things - this also helps to keep practice interesting! I am also keen to help each student find their own voice and expression through music, tailoring lessons to each student's needs and goals.

I have specialist knowledge of medieval, renaissance, and baroque music, and can help students to develop skills in historical performance and ornamentation/improvisation.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

About Me
Daniel is a recorder and flute player with a passion for both early and contemporary music. “An exciting and versatile young recorder player, committed to pushing the boundaries of his instrument” (Erik Bosgraaf, 2021), Daniel is pursuing his own musical voice in myriad fields from renaissance consort music to contemporary music theatre productions. Daniel has just graduated from his Masters in recorder at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam for which he was awarded a scholarship from The Countess of Munster Musical Trust. Previously, he graduated from the Royal College of Music London with a First-Class Joint Honours Bachelor’s degree in Flute and Recorder.

Since 2019 Daniel has been a member of The Royal Wind Music, performing concerts across Europe and making appearances on Dutch and German TV and Radio. The group is a recorder double quintet and performs exciting new programs of renaissance music, completely from memory. Their latest programme is a celebration of the Dutch composer J. P. Sweelinck and will be premiered in October 2021. As a soloist, Daniel has researched and presented his own unique programs at the Open Recorder Days Amsterdam Fringe and in the Amsterdam concert series Les Goûts Réunis. He has also been selected as a finalist for the Moeck/SRP Recorder Competition, which will take place in November 2021.

In February 2020 together with Emily Bannister, Anastasia Terranova and Verena Barie, Daniel won Amsterdam’s Grachten Festival prize in the cross-over category for their music theatre performance that fused renaissance and electronic music, The Eternal Feminine. The performances are taking place in the fall of 2021 and are funded by the Amsterdam Fonds voor de Kunst. Daniel’s playing is also featured in the recently released blockbuster film, The Green Knight, by director David Lowery. With his recorder quintet Five Spice, Daniel has performed in the Utrecht Early Music Fringe, Leipzig International Chamber Music Academy and the Uitmarkt Festival in Amsterdam as well as a tour in Denmark and Austria. Daniel has participated in recorder masterclasses with Pierre Hamon, Maurice Steger, Michael Form, Dorothee Oberlinger, Walter van Hauwe, and Paul Leenhouts.

As a Cambridge University graduate in the Faculty of Education, I am delighted to have settled down in the Netherlands since September 2019. I started piano at the age of 5, and music has been an important part of my life ever since.

Classically trained as a violinist, I picked up another instrument named Erhu (Chinese violin) and became a professional performer. I am experienced in teaching both children and adults, from different cultural backgrounds.

Also, I have been actively involved in both Western and Chinese orchestra since high school. Thanks to my years of experience in being an orchestra member and soloist, I am also familiar with orchestral music.

As a humble music therapist, I am passionate about music and believe in the power of music. I trust that music is in everybody and I respect every student's individuality and thus tailor my teaching methods to develop my students' full potential.

I started teaching in 2009 and most students put their trust in me when they first decided to learn an instrument. I also enjoy exploring the world of music with students with learning disabilities.

I am proud to say, my students, aged from 5 to 60, are enthusiastic in playing the instrument they have chosen and keen to improve their skills following my advice.

I adopt a flexible approach in teaching - I believe every student is unique and my job is to develop the strengths and improve the weaknesses. I put a lot of emphasis on a solid foundation in my teaching.

For young children, I tend to use a more interactive approach to explain complicated music theories, yet strict in the fundamentals such as posture and rhythm. For adults, I am always happy to discuss with them my lesson plan and choose the best exercises and songs that suit their music interests and needs.

For my students who would like to take exams, I am happy to tailor the lessons based on their progress. I believe in the quality of learning and understanding rather than the number of pieces that they learn. Many beginners and their parents have put their trusts in me and achieved distinction in their first ABRSM exam.

I am fluent in English and Mandarin Chinese, and a native speaker of Cantonese Chinese.

I am happy to travel and travel costs will be added on the top of the standard tuition fee.
