About Me

Hi!

My name is Gert-Jan and I'm a professional (jazz)musician, drummer, composer and teacher.

As a musician my main focus is jazz music. I'm mostly active as a (contemporary) jazzdrummer and I'm playing in numerous bands on various stages.
As a teacher I'm working at Luca School of Arts Leuven (Lemmeninsitute) where I'm teaching jazzdrums and rhythm to bachelor and master students. Besides that I'm also teaching jazz/pop/rock drums, ensemble and theory at Kunstencampus Hasselt.

Recently I moved to Ghent where I'm able to teach additional lessons at my music studio or in the neighborhood. Looking forward meeting you!

Together we look for what inspires you, what supports you technically, and find your path in learning how to sing. We'll work on breathing, tone, style, and the mental game that comes with being a confident singer and regular practice. I focus on giving you a positive learning experience; I'm going to empower you by teaching you step by step, so you know what your process is and you can reproduce it yourself at home or at a gig. If you're interested, we can also work on songwriting and/or accompanying yourself on an instrument.

You decide the tempo at which we work, you decide what and what style you want to work on, you decide whether you take classes of 30 or 60 minutes and how regularly you take them. You'll get exercises, sheet music and backing tracks to practice at home. You're allowed to record the class so you can remember everything and hear your progress. If you want to, we can even make a professional recording of you singing. Everything is possible, and everything we do will be in dialogue with each other. Wether you come every week, or every month, it's all up to you, as long as you put in the practice at home you'll make big leaps forward.

My drum lessons can go in all directions. From jazz to pop and rock and hip hop. Always starting from a good technical basis and live guidance. For all levels and age groups. Usually I build up the lessons from technical exercises. These serve as a warm-up and basic vocabulary for the student. The technical exercises start with simple single strokes but quickly build up to rolls, accents, double strokes and flams. The second part of a lesson covers the knowledge of different grooves. Both two-part and three-part grooves are part of the lesson package, but also quintuplets of grooves.
