Our lessons will be based on conversation, exclusively in Chinese;) I can offer you a list of varied conversational topics, sometimes including a video or an article, allowing you to learn new vocabulary at each session. Of course, we can orientate the course around your preferences, such as work related topics, to fit your needs. I will provide a vocabulary list at the end of each session. Thanks to our lessons, you will be able to improve your fluency and pronunciation while enriching your vocabulary with new expressions used by native speakers! In my lessons, I like mixing several elements and learning materials to keep it fun and interactive! Our lessons will be focused, first, on conversation and will mainly be in Chinese, and English if you want. We will use videos, articles, podcasts or movies as base for discussion allowing you to improve your comprehension, speaking and reading skills while understanding better Chinese culture and Chinese people! As grammar and conjugation are also key elements, and not always the easiest ones, we will take the time to practice them. After each lesson, I will provide you with exercices to do in order to practice the points seen together during the lesson.

With a master's degree in Sinology (KULeuven, 2015), years of professional experience in the field and 6 years of experience in the Chinese Minor bachelor programme and evening courses at VUB, I'm confident that my courses offer an efficient and comprehensive path to Chinese language proficiency. This class provides tailor-made Chinese language courses for any age. By default, the course focusses on oral communication (listening and speaking skills) with a large amount of interaction. Reading and writing is available (and recommended), but optional. As a non-native speaker, I know what it is to learn Chinese at a later age. I run private lessons, where all levels are welcome. But if you’re a total beginner then I offer basic classes to help you find the way to get into it. I develop diverse methods of teaching for the students. For the around 5-8 years old kids, I would like to set certain games to play with them, thereby the kids can learn the new language during the interaction and communication. In this way, different media, like color pictures, puppets, or storybooks are essential to make the course very attractive. For the teenager or advanced students, a structuralized teaching content based on scenarios or textbook could help the students to develop their language capacity efficiently in different aspects – listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Besides, I would like to give a deeper perspective for the Chinese- not only learning the language from the textbooks, but also the knowledge of the language, the culture, and the literature. Also, based on your need and situation, we choose different textbooks and make a personal teaching plan for you.

With my thorough knowledge of the Chinese language and culture, we will search together for the appropriate way to master the language. In my experience, everyone learns in a different way, so we will find out together what is the most fun! I graduated in 2017 as a Sinologist at Ghent University (Chinese language and culture). I also obtained a master's degree at Sichuan University (四川大学) (2018). After that, I spent a few years in China. In addition to a basic course with an emphasis on oral, I create lessons that go beyond just language. Chinese language is embedded in culture and history, so we also take a moment to reflect on that. I have experience with private lessons for adults who move to China as expats, but the lessons are flexible and for all ages! Lessons: I use a basic Chinese course but there is a lot we can fill in ourselves. What kind of series/films do you like to watch? Is there any music you like to listen to? Through these questions I can recommend certain Chinese music and series that we can work with. For example, instead of homework I will give a film to watch, this way we learn through absorption instead of forcing ourselves to remember everything. If it is fun, everything sticks better! Would you like to focus more on speaking instead of writing or vice versa? That is possible, in which situations would you like to use Chinese? For work or for a trip? That way we can adapt the lessons to personal wishes. Once we have progressed a bit further, I also organize lessons and dinners with Chinese friends in Ghent or Brussels, so we can practice with real "native speakers". Due to location, I only offer lessons online, but if your current base is in Beijing, we could have in person lessons. My lessons are usually 16 times, 1-2 hours for each time, with variations according to your learning goals. The specific lesson time is decided by both of us before each lesson starts. Before teaching, we need to work out a tailored schedule for your study. So tell me what your goal is and I’ll make a plan for you. The teaching plan will come into effect only with your consent. Note that after each lesson you may be required to finish some homework to test where you are, and you should send it to my email before next lesson. This may sound like strict but you don’t need to worry, because I’ll make it easy to handle and you’ll also feel a sense of achievement. This is a bilateral project so we need to make sure our communication before, during and after each lesson to be smoothly.
