About Me
Hi, I’m Mike, a guitar teacher and English tutor based in Amsterdam with over 30 years of experience as a musician, composer, and educator.

I’ve worked professionally in recording studios, live performance, and music production — and I bring that real-world experience to my lessons. My guitar classes focus on practical playing skills for real musicians: rhythm, tone, timing, improvisation, and performance. Whether you’re a beginner learning your first chords or an experienced player looking to refine your style, I’ll help you build confidence and develop your own sound.

As an English teacher, I specialize in conversational English, pronunciation, and writing skills for adults and professionals. My lessons are designed to improve fluency and natural communication, whether for daily life, business, or creative work.

I believe that learning works best when it’s personal, practical, and enjoyable. Every student learns differently, so my approach is flexible and focused on real progress — not just theory.

If you’re looking for a guitar teacher or English tutor in Amsterdam who understands how to connect real-world experience with modern learning, I’d love to work with you.
Education
hold a Bachelor of Arts in Literature from California State University, Northridge (1989), which gave me a strong foundation in communication, writing, and analysis.
I also studied Japanese language at Temple University, Tokyo (2012), which deepened my understanding of second-language learning from a student’s perspective.

I’m a professional guitarist, composer, and producer with over 30 years of experience in recording, performing, and restoring vintage instruments. My lessons are built around real-world playing — not endless scales, but practical music that builds confidence, creativity, and great tone.

Whether you’re a beginner just picking up the guitar or an experienced player looking to refine your sound, I’ll help you understand not only what to play but why it sounds good.

We’ll cover:

Building solid rhythm and expressive phrasing

Understanding tone, pedals, and gear setup

Classic rock, blues, and modern techniques

Playing with feel and intention

Optional lessons on recording and home setup

Lessons are relaxed, friendly, and tailored to your pace. I teach both in person (Amsterdam) and online, and every student gets a personalized plan that fits their goals — whether that’s playing your favorite songs, improving tone, or developing your own sound.

If you’ve ever wanted lessons from someone who’s been there, both on stage and in the studio, this is for you.

I have years of experience with ESL and have taken multiple courses training myself in the best ways to tutor in ESL. I am happy to teach all ages. I currently teach several adults and numerous younger students. I specialize in students who have recently moved to the Netherlands and have little to no experience with English. I apply a hybrid method of ESL and school curriculum.

After working for four years as a private tutor in Amsterdam for numerous international families, I have discovered a love for teaching Adult ESL. My goal is to not only to teach ESL tailored to life in the Netherlands, but to also offer advice and support to expat adults around life in Amsterdam. I currently work with the parents of many of my students who wish to improve their English. I am a former primary school teacher (International School of Choueifat-Dubai) who now works exclusively as a private tutor. My students are mainly expats, though I also do have several local Dutch students. Having moved around quite a bit, I understand the stress families undergo adapting to a new school system. After four year in Amsterdam, I also now understand the unique stress parents also endure adapting to Dutch culture and regular use of the English language. My teaching methods focus on improving Adult ESL that is tailored specifically to life in the Netherlands. I design my teaching plans, with my students, to cover the most essential aspects of English that are needed to navigate life in Amsterdam. Moreover, I have a deep understanding of how English in the Netherlands differs from conversational English in other countries. I have a grasp of the nuances of both languages and the areas which pose particular difficulty. I really enjoy the motivation of my adult students and the unique friendships I have formed through teaching. I know how isolated some parents who are neither native English nor Dutch speakers feel when moving to Amsterdam.

I am happy to teach all ages either in person or via webcam.

Need extra support with one or more subjects, help with planning homework or learn how to best prepare for that one difficult test (week) that is coming up? I'd love to help you! Learning in a way that suits you is central during the tutoring/homework guidance. During the tutoring sessions we can look for a way of learning and planning that works best for you, so that you can get started in the lessons and also have the tools to continue with this yourself afterwards. The most important thing is that you understand the material and can get started with confidence!

I am 18 years old, just finished 6th grade and have experience tutoring different ages. I completed the Culture & Society profile with Greek and Latin and followed bilingual education and lessons according to the IB-English program. I can also give the tutoring lessons in English, if that is your preference. Want to know more about me? Please take a look at my profile!

Areas I can help you with:

Primary school: Students from any group are welcome for tutoring in all subjects/topics or to prepare for a (cito) test. I can practice with your child with the material taught at school, practice for CITO tests, explain what your child does not yet understand and improve the general skills required within a particular subject in a fun and educational way. Whether this is language, arithmetic or reading comprehension, I am happy to help your child understand it better and find pleasure in the subject that may still be difficult!

Secondary school:
- Dutch up to vwo 6
- English: up to VWO 6
- Art: up to VWO 6
- Latin: up to and including VWO 3
- Geography: up to VWO 5
- History: up to VWO 5
- Mathematics: up to VWO 3

For both primary and secondary school I also offer homework support, where I can help with planning making and/or learning work. Sometimes it is still complicated to get an overview and create structure in all the work, I like to tackle this with the student in the way that suits him/her best.
