Ciao! I have been teaching Italian for the past twelve years. I have taught privately and at language schools like La Scuola Italiana del Greenwich Village in New York and ItalCultura, the school of the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago. During the first few lessons I will make sure you have the tools to pronounce and identify all the sounds of the Italian language. This step is essential! And it will make everything easier afterwards. When I teach Italian I try to avoid all the things that I hated as a language student. We will use real songs, real literature, do real conversation and storytelling. When you are engaging all your senses it is easier to keep your mind relaxed and to remember new words.

I will customize my materials to your interests, needs and desired pace. And because you are learning from a native Italian you will also learn about Italian culture and history. You will absorb a way of thinking, not just grammar rules.

I speak a bunch of languages so I know a thing or two about how tedious language classes can be. My terrifying French teacher in middle school made us repeat the same fake dialogue from a really bad book ad nauseam, over and over and over again. Some of those dialogues are carved in my brain: “Bonjour, je m’appelle Richard Drapeau, je viens du Canada, je suis Canadien...”

When I teach Italian I try to avoid all the things that I hated as a language student. We will use real songs, real literature, do real conversation and storytelling and we will go on “talking walks” because when you are engaging all your senses it is easier to keep your mind relaxed and to remember new words.

I hold a degree in Lingue e Letterature Straniere (Foreign Languages and Literatures) from Università Roma Tre (equivalent to an American MA) and a Master’s of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts and Media from Columbia College Chicago. I wrote a thesis about translating a long epic poem by W. H. Auden and I tried to ride a horse across America.

Ciao ! Je m’appelle Francesco et je vis en Belgique depuis 2018. Je viens d’une petite ville de Ligurie, dans le nord de l’Italie, et je suis actuellement en train de terminer un doctorat en philosophie. Depuis plusieurs années, je donne des cours particuliers à des personnes qui souhaitent apprendre l'italien pour des raisons professionnelles ou simplement par plaisir. J’ai également donné deux cours dans une école du soir en Flandre : un cours classique axé sur la grammaire et le vocabulaire, ainsi qu’un cours de conversation destiné à des étudiants plus avancés. Selon ton niveau, nous pouvons organiser les leçons comme un cours de conversation, afin de développer tes compétences d’expression et de compréhension orale. Et lorsque cela s’avère nécessaire, nous pourrons nous concentrer plus précisément sur la grammaire et la construction des phrases. Ou bien nous pouvons accorder plus de place à la grammaire et puis nous orienter vers la conversation lorsqu’il y aura suffisamment de bases pour le faire. As an Italian Opera singer, I help since many years singers with the right pronunciation of the repertoire they sing, helping them in shaping the language in a clear way, which also helps the singing.

Our lesson will involve speaking, pronunciation exercises and singing.
We will start the lesson by reading the text and finding the right direction and emphasis.
We will focus on the sounds and how to produce them.
In the second part of the lesson, we will apply all of the above to the singing!

Ich mag es, jede Unterrichtsstunde/jeden Kurs individuell an die Bedürfnisse und Ziele meiner Schüler anzupassen. Mein Unterricht konzentriert sich auf die Verbesserung der Kommunikationsfähigkeiten der Schüler. Bei Anfängern und unteren Mittelstufen bevorzuge ich die Verwendung eines Lehrbuchs/Schülerbuchs im ersten Teil des Unterrichts. Normalerweise verwende ich „Nuovissimo Progetto Italiano“ und „Arrivederci“ von Edilingua oder „Nuovo Espresso“ und „Dieci“ von Alma Publishing. Für den zweiten Teil der Lektion erstelle ich ansprechende Inhalte mit Originalvideos, Presseartikeln, Auszügen aus Blogs und sozialen Medien sowie literarischen Texten. Wenn sich die Schüler nicht wohl fühlen, Italienisch von Grund auf zu beherrschen, kann ich auf Englisch, Deutsch oder Niederländisch wechseln. In der Kursgebühr ist die Korrektur von Hausaufgaben enthalten.

I have been teaching languages for 15 years and in the last 5 years I have been an online tutor. I think it is a fantastic way to help students and it is really convenient for students too avoiding commuting from and to the teacher
I always pay close attention to that all materials, videos, podcasts , worksheets, articles and texts should be the most up- to- date. In the first lesson we always clarify the students' needs and goals with the language as well as assessing the individual levels.
