Über mich
Music has always held a significant place in my life, serving as a potent and instinctual conduit for connecting with people.

Growing up amidst a family immersed in art and music, my fascination with music was ignited from an early age. During my third year in college, an opportunity arose that would profoundly shape my journey. I was fortunate to be chosen as an exchange student in Japan, where I encountered the mesmerizing tones of the Tsugaru Shamisen, a traditional Japanese instrument. The moment I heard its captivating notes, a tremor of emotion coursed through me. This encounter marked the genesis of a deep connection.

Under the guidance of a revered Tsugaru master, I embarked on a journey of learning. My time in Japan not only taught me how to skillfully wield the Tsugaru but also delved into the depths of traditional Japanese culture and etiquette. I was privileged to accompany my teacher in performances at Izakayas and traditional stages, enriching my bond with the instrument and deepening my appreciation for Japanese heritage.

What captivates me most about the Tsugaru Shamisen is its unique method of play. Unlike typical stringed instruments, we employ a tool called a Bachi to strike the strings and produce sound, eschewing conventional sweeping or bowing techniques. Through these strikes, a diverse range of distinct and fascinating sounds emerges. To me, the experience is akin to a captivating blend of guitars and drums.

Following my return to Taiwan, I dedicated nine years to advancing my skills on the Tsugaru Shamisen, ultimately becoming a full-time player. Throughout this period, I seized numerous opportunities to collaborate with musicians across diverse genres, dedicating substantial time to composing my original music and delivering cross-genre performances.

This year, I embarked on a new chapter as a music student within the Global Music Department of the Sibelius Academy. My aspiration is to share my unique interpretation of the Tsugaru with the global community. Moreover, I'm brimming with anticipation to connect with fellow musicians from around the world, seeking to collaborate and ignite innovative, brilliant works that resonate far and wide.

Hello! My name is Franziska and I am 23 year old master’s student in classical music (flute) performance at the Sibelius Academy, in Helsinki.
