I believe that the most important skill that a student has to develop prior university is self-learning and the ability to cope with mistakes.
To make a student self-learner I focus on three things: fundamentals, connections and interest.
I try to teach fundamentals through a discussion. I try to make the student ask questions rather than listen. Once all mysteries are clear, repetition is the key.
Once fundamentals are crystal, I try to teach a student how to connect bits of knowledge to answer a question. A narrative is always easier to work with than random memorised sentences.
Once the student can make connections, one can spark interest. Using real-world examples I try to show the student how their knowledge can be applied. How logic connections they make can answer hot topics in science!
Finally, I put a lot of attention on dealing with mistakes. It is easy to be top of the class in a school. However, once students go to university, the level of studies sky-rockets. Mistakes are unavoidable and for some that can be devastating. I do my best to show the student that mistakes are really opportunities to improve. Everyone makes them and they should not discourage them.
