Political Belief Systems: An Introduction to Ideology
course price icon
Von 24 $ /Std
arrow icon
Everyone who engages with politics (which is to say, everyone) has an ideology. But not everyone is conscious of- let alone consistent in their ideology. In fact, most people’s conscious politics are nothing more than an inconsistent aesthetic. But anyone who has a world they long to see owes it to themselves to at least be self aware of their own ideology, and they should probably also familiarize themselves with others as well. I can help on both fronts.

This 10-session class serves as an introduction to the concept of political ideology. We will begin with a brief overview to various major academic theories of ideology, before moving on to a taxonomical survey of different ideological genuses and families, both “thick-centered” ideologies, that is, ideologies with a comprehensive core specific enough that they can stand on their own as it were, such as liberalism, conservatism, socialism, and fascism, and “thin centered” ideologies, which have much broader and hence much less specific cores, and hence must attach themselves to other thick centered host ideologies in order to fully manifest themselves, such as populism, nationalism, feminism, and ecologism.

Worldbuilding is the art of creating settings for your stories, whether they be written and published, or role-played out by a Dungeons and Dragons or other TTRPG group. Stories are fun, but they’re funner if you build the world in which they take place well. I can help you with that, especially when it comes to creating compelling, realistic, and/or thematic fictional histories, politics, and societies.

PS I only give tutoring in German and am not a German teacher, which is why it is difficult to teach children who do not speak German the language first.

Theories of international relations are a must to understand global politics. However, given the multitude of theories and authors, studying them can be a bit overwhelming. I offer this class for poli sci students who are struggling with the theories and how to apply them, but also to anyone curious to learn more about the world we live in today. If needed, we can also talk about political philosophy, which, in a way, forms the basis of the theories we know today.
I can teach this class in French or English.

Philosophy is much more than a simple method; it's a more general way of positioning ourselves, even a way of life. At its core, it's critical thinking and the ability to see beyond what's left unsaid and unclear, and to find information, question, and arrive at a more nuanced vision of the world.

Together we will begin with everyday facts to explore the foundations of philosophy, look for clues in the history of thought and learn to be independent in our critical thinking.

I also support the questioning of major texts and problems posed in literature courses, philosophy courses in middle school, and preparation for the Swiss maturity, see prep for university studies.

NB: Particular interest in feminism to better understand current societal issues is welcome. I reserve the right to refuse any indecent or misogynistic contact.

It is true that the philosopher is the friend of wisdom, but above all, he is someone who does not want to make mistakes in reasoning. Philosophizing is a way of reasoning and a way of solving problems that will never have a perfect and definitive solution. Knowing the distance between the Earth and the Moon is not a problem of philosophy, because it is enough to measure to solve it. On the other hand, knowing, for example, what justice is, is a problem of philosophy. A meter will not be able to help us know the answer. We must go about it differently, and in the courses I offer, I will teach you how.

You will learn

- text reading strategies
- case studies with the aim of learning from experts
- methodology in philosophy
- writing an essay
- writing a text commentary
- a work on the philosophers of your choice
- an overview of the history of philosophy
- the general culture necessary to be able to philosophize

I will adapt to your individual needs. Each course is tailor-made. We will analyze where your difficulties lie and together develop a course program that will make you perform as quickly as possible. The basic principle of the courses I offer is dialectics, like Plato's dialogues: reflecting together, making theoretical contributions, asking questions and seeking answers, and testing the validity of reasoning.

For the past 10 years, I have been teaching German using the philosophy methodology, having studied philosophy at the Master's level at Aix-Marseille University. It turns out that the analytical mind is very useful even outside the confines of philosophy. Today, there are even fields of activity such as management with philosophy or philotherapy. In recent years, some German students have asked me to also teach them philosophy courses, and that is why I decided to offer philosophy courses directly.

I look forward to meeting you during a first lesson.

Learn to think with the great philosophers of the past!

In these tutorials you will learn
- about the ideas of some of the most famous and influential philosophers of the modern age,
- how to read and understand original philosophical texts,
- most importantly, how to become a critical thinker and philosophise on your own.

In ten tutorials (each two hours long), we will follow the development of modern philosophy from the 17th century to the present. We will start with Descartes, look at Spinoza, Locke, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, and end with Wittgenstein and Heidegger. We will cover topics in the philosophy of mind and language, in epistemology, metaphysics and ethics. We will discuss questions such as "Is the mind distinct from matter?", "Can I know anything?", "Can we distinguish between good and evil?", "Does God exist?" etc.

Note:
You can choose whether you prefer ten tutorials (each two hours long) or twenty tutorials (each one hour long).

About me:
I am a retired university professor who still enjoys teaching philosophy. I have taught many students (graduate and undergraduate) for several decades at reputable British universities. I obtained my philosophy doctorate at the University of Oxford. I have published many books and articles in philosophy. Among my favourite philosophers are Aristotle, Aquinas, Descartes, Kant, Wittgenstein and Heidegger.

Hello! I am a private tutor (in-person and online) in philosophy, history, social sciences, and political science. I have been teaching since 2014 and I support a variety of audiences (secondary, higher education, researchers). My teaching method is active: flipped classroom, Socratic debate, project-based learning, criterion-referenced assessments (rubrics), and rapid feedback. I help students formulate a solid problem, structure a plan, argue rigorously, and cite their sources correctly.

I work with digital tools (Moodle, Teams/Zoom, Zotero, NVivo/ATLAS.ti, SPSS/R) and I provide clear support: learning objectives, timetable, assessment criteria. The sessions alternate between summary contributions, guided exercises and discussion sessions. I value curiosity, intellectual discipline and academic honesty (zero ghostwriting, methodological support only).

Areas of expertise: ethics and political theory, history of ideas, discourse analysis, methodology (qualitative/quantitative). Languages: fluent French and English; German read/spoken, Portuguese read; Latin/Ancient Greek (reading). I am caring but demanding: I set explicit expectations, encourage autonomy, and remain available between sessions for targeted questions. If you are looking for structured mentoring, based on clarity, method, and the joy of learning, I will be happy to support you.
