Italian and Indonesian conversations: become a native speaker!

Italian and Indonesian are not widely spoken languages, however, both the Italian and Indonesian community are spread across the world and I have noticed that many are the mixed Italian and Indonesian families living in the Hague!

My classes are not special, they are simply meant for children and adults who wish to have someone who they can talk to and improve either Italian or Indonesian. My classes will “offer” you a friend who can stimulate you to speak the language and learn the everyday language without being particularly ambitious. Sometimes what it counts is to understand the everyday language culture and not being afraid to speak. That’s what you to grasp for my classes. Perfection is awesome but confidence and fluency are admirable and appealing!

Ciao! I have been teaching Italian for the past twelve years. I have taught privately and at language schools like La Scuola Italiana del Greenwich Village in New York and ItalCultura, the school of the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago. During the first few lessons I will make sure you have the tools to pronounce and identify all the sounds of the Italian language. This step is essential! And it will make everything easier afterwards. When I teach Italian I try to avoid all the things that I hated as a language student. We will use real songs, real literature, do real conversation and storytelling. When you are engaging all your senses it is easier to keep your mind relaxed and to remember new words.

I will customize my materials to your interests, needs and desired pace. And because you are learning from a native Italian you will also learn about Italian culture and history. You will absorb a way of thinking, not just grammar rules.

I speak a bunch of languages so I know a thing or two about how tedious language classes can be. My terrifying French teacher in middle school made us repeat the same fake dialogue from a really bad book ad nauseam, over and over and over again. Some of those dialogues are carved in my brain: “Bonjour, je m’appelle Richard Drapeau, je viens du Canada, je suis Canadien...”

When I teach Italian I try to avoid all the things that I hated as a language student. We will use real songs, real literature, do real conversation and storytelling and we will go on “talking walks” because when you are engaging all your senses it is easier to keep your mind relaxed and to remember new words.

I hold a degree in Lingue e Letterature Straniere (Foreign Languages and Literatures) from Università Roma Tre (equivalent to an American MA) and a Master’s of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts and Media from Columbia College Chicago. I wrote a thesis about translating a long epic poem by W. H. Auden and I tried to ride a horse across America.

For over 30 years I have been passionately teaching individual and group lessons to people of all levels. I am Gianni, a born and raised Florentine who has been living in Delft for quite some time. Florence, the birthplace of the Italian language, is also the city of Dante Alighieri, the founder of modern Italian. No, we are not related 😉, but just as Haarlem in the Netherlands is known for its ABN pronunciation, Florentine Italian is considered the standard language. I proudly convey this authentic Italian in my lessons.

Professional experience
I am currently a teacher of Italian at the Volksuniversiteit Delft, after having previously taught for four years at the Volksuniversiteit Rotterdam. In addition to my work as a teacher, I am also a professional singer of traditional Italian folk songs. I like to integrate this passion into my lessons, because music is a powerful tool for learning a language. Well-known lyrics and melodies not only make the learning process more fun, but also more effective. I often accompany my singing with guitar, which creates an authentic Italian atmosphere.

Teaching method
For beginners, I use an accessible textbook that explains the basics of Italian step by step. During the lessons, I immediately correct mistakes in sentences or pronunciation, so that you gain more confidence in speaking. My approach is practical and interactive: every mistake is an opportunity to learn something new, whether it is a word, a grammatical rule, an anecdote or a cultural context.

In addition, we pay attention to Tuscan cuisine and culture, so that you not only learn the language, but also experience the rich Italian lifestyle. For advanced I work with more advanced texts, current topics and conversations, so that you continue to develop your language skills.

Hello there! I am a university student at Erasmus University and would be thrilled to help others learn the languages I am comfortable and confident speaking! I am Italian and would happily teach such a dear to me! Moreover, I have always studied in a French-speaking school, making me fluent in both languages and prepared to juggle and learn languages myself. Additionally, I have been studying English since I was four and am currently studying for my bachelor's degree in English! I have certificates for all the languages I speak, and as I have, been learning multiple languages since a young age, I consider myself fit to help others understand them too!
