Trusted teacher: The Chomskian Linguistics model: what this course focuses on and how I can help you The premise: A theory of universal grammar that aims to explain why syntax has the properties it does, and how the human child comes to the world with ‘genetic guidance’ in their native language competence. This is a cognitive approach to grammar, not merely taxonomic (I am aware that most schools in the UK don’t teach grammar). Some parts of the theory (which spans 70 years to date) are taught in different universities at different stages of its development. Students have approached me to know more (or clarify) the Minimalist program (1995 onwards) which has aimed to reduce the conceptual apparatus and simplify the theory. We shall look at VPISH (VP-internal subject hypothesis) and VP shells as well as doing away with intermediate projections which have relied on X-bar theory. The latter is still taught at some freshers’ classes. A good grasp of grammatical categories (noun, verb, adverb) will be necessary as well as grammatical functions (predicate, subject, inflection, adjunct). Some courses are still relying on binding and c-command, as well as other theoretical landmarks which are necessary for understanding the evolution of the theoretical model. Exercises set and essay titles will rely on the student’s targeted requirements (as per their own university). For those who want to prepare for a forthcoming university course, or wish to explore this grammatical model, we shall follow UK authors who have shown a more sympathetic approach to learning.

This session is for 1 hour and I will send you an extensive report the following week. This class includes my wife as my guest speaker. a Reading Specialist. The result of this class, is not only to determine your learner's reading and writing age but also, the category of reader; as there are 6 main categories in reading; which I will discuss shortly. If your learner decides to remain in the class, the following weeks incudes puppets, games, story writing and much more. Once a week, we will work on reading strategies using puppets, show & tell and memory games Topic/Theme Week 1 - speaking & listening; finding out what the learner likes and hobbies. Topic/Theme Week 2 - Reading & Writing Reading Age Test. Topic/Theme Week 3 - How to read double & treble vowel blends and consonant blends. Topic/Theme Week 4 - onwards - Writing stories & books that we write together. The learners will receive comprehension, dictation, punctuation, grammar, parts of speech/language components (prepositions etc). All books read in class will be books that the learners have made via the whiteboard; which will then be sent to them as a message on the classroom wall; to print out for their own use. This class will also illustrate what areas need improvement. The student should know; In regards to reading: names of letters and their sounds, consonant blends, vowel blends, understand syllables, phonetic knowledge, cluster digraphs, compound words, linguistic tools, comprehension and how to use a dictionary & thesaurus. In regards to writing: letter forming, spelling, character description, stories/compositions, improvement in story telling. 12-16yr olds includes, note taking, essay writing, dictation, CV's & cover/formal letter writing, speed writing, script writing, debating & public speaking skills, poetry and writing for academic purposes. The overall goal is to present a clear path, to unleashing the hidden Author. The 60 minute Reading & Writing Ability Test in the 2nd class; is not only to determine the reading and writing age but also, the category of reader; as there are 6 main categories in reading: DEPENDENT (reader relies on an experienced reader for total help; like stories being read to them) EMERGENT (reader still relies on experienced reader, starts to hold book upright and turn pages of books 'pretending' to read and starts to 'scribble') INDEPENDENT (reader has sight word recognition, knows alphabet sounds, starts to read books with repeated words, forms coherent sentences) FLUENT (reader reads with confidence, but still needs help with unfamiliar words, uses syllables, cluster consonant digraphs, starts to use dictionary and write own stories) EXPERIENCED (reader can read fluently without help, knows how to work out unfamiliar words using many strategies including phonic knowledge and linguistic tools, uses dictionary & thesaurus, enjoys writing own stories, articles, is a good speaker and is speed reading). Our interest in reading starts for some as young as 3 years old, as DEPENDENT readers; especially if parents are always reading. At this stage we would give our 3-year-old aspirant, lots of puzzles, painting, drawing & colouring, letter art, shopping lists, etc; because the world is surrounded by colour and shapes (the left brain sees the word as a shape and the right brain sees a picture to explain the word/sentence). Let us not forget that reading and writing/composition go hand in hand; so, if you have a child that struggles with composition, they are 9 times out of 10 struggling with reading. From the age of 16 years old onwards, we should be SEASONED readers; once there isn't a cognitive deficit.

Gemma was a wonderful teacher. Her and I walked around Florence while she was simultaneously teaching me Italian. Her easy going and positive attitude made learning fun while also being very substantial. Gemma is super patient, and after the second day I could construct longer, more complicated sentences. I had mentioned some struggles I have had within schooling where I struggled with pronouns and prepositions, and by the first day I could do it easy no problem due to her explanations being very good. Overall I Gemma is a very good tutor and I highly recommend her.
