Like the recorder, the instrument comes in a variety of sizes, from small instruments in the register of the violin to large double bass ones. The best known and most commonly used type is the bass viol. The bass viol can best be described as a cross between a cello and a guitar: the tuning and left hand technique are close to the guitar, but playing position and bowing are reminiscent of the cello. Film buffs know the instrument from the movie 'Tous les Matins du Monde' in which the gamba music of Ste. Colombe and Marin Marais is central. The instrument is also known through the passions of JS Bach, in which it plays a prominent role. But the instrument also has a rich and diverse repertoire, ranging from late renaissance to early classical and an increasing number of contemporary pieces. I studied gamba at the royal conservatory in The Hague with Wieland Kuijken.
