Hi, I'm Leyi. Born and grow up in mainland China, but I have been moving around the world. I have been teaching Mandarin for six years, and I started teaching Mandarin Chinese when I was in high school to kindergarteners/grade-school students/adults in the US. I am chatty, effective, and patient, so most of my students like me (or I think so? hahaha). Because I have experience with linguistics as a subject and was exposed to many languages while growing up, I like to use students' first and second language (language-specific), my academic, and language knowledge to have personalised study plans for my students. I do not believe in a grammar-focused study plan, and I hope my students can learn the things they want (one student particularly wanted to learn Chinese poetry, which meant teaching him modern Chinese syntax or rhyme would not make sense). Some of my students felt they were more prepared when they went on exchange. In terms of characters learning (both simplified and traditional), I also would re-arrange the plans (ex. an exam-focused plan would contain a denser portion of character learning than a person who just wants to watch C-drama ).

My research in linguistics, particularly in Second Language Acquisition (SLA), focused on analysing how linguistic distances impact language learning abilities among multilingual. These experiences have deepened my understanding of language learning processes, allowing me to tailor teaching methods that cater to learners' diverse linguistic backgrounds. As a Mandarin teacher, this equips me with the ability to create targeted, effective lesson plans that facilitate faster and more intuitive learning for my students, grounded in evidence-based practices.

I’ve been teaching and tutoring languages since middle school, tailoring my lessons to a variety of goals, such as preparing for language exams (HSK), fostering cultural interest, and supporting business communication. My journey as an educator began with my first student, an American expat in mainland China, who initially struggled with Mandarin grammar and tones. Through dedicated practice, he overcame these challenges and eventually gained the confidence to navigate daily life using only Mandarin. I also have experience teaching K-6 students, which strengthened my understanding of adapting methods to different learning levels.

I prefer to teach through interactive, engaging lessons that bring the language to life. However, for those with exam goals, structured practice and homework are sometimes necessary. Currently, I am also helping adults who are married to Chinese partners and want to communicate more naturally with their families. During my studies in Econometrics at the University of Amsterdam (graduated in 2015, MSc.) and in addition to my job as a consultant, I have always taught mathematics and statistics to secondary school students and university students (HBO and WO) with great pleasure. Since 2017 I have assisted students from different study backgrounds (from civil engineering to psychology) with writing their thesis and since 2022 I work parttime as a math teacher and educational advisor in the Emma Children's Hospital in Amsterdam and I teach private students.

Een hele grote overgang als je van de basisschool waar je iedereen al kent vanaf je kleutertijd, waar de ouders elkaar ook kennen en je bent ook nog de oudste en je hebt vaak maar 1 of 2 leerkrachten en dan kom je opeens op de middelbare school waar je de jongste bent, waar je vaak nog niet veel leerlingen kent, waarin je voor ieder vak een andere docent krijgt, die allemaal weer op hun eigen manier werken en dan ben je ook eens weer de jongste , een brugpijler en als klap op de vuurpijl ben je ook in de puberteit beland en ben je bezig je wat los te maken van je ouders. Ga er maar aanstaan. En dan willen ze ook nog dat je huiswerk gaat maken.
Zelf heb ik deze overgang bij mijn zoon als veel te groot ervaren en weet ik hoe verloren je kunt voelen de eerste maanden op deze vaak ook nog grootschalige scholen met 2000 leerlingen. Wat ik zelf nooit heb begrepen dat je juist op deze leeftijd op een vaak anonieme plek terecht komt waar de docenten niet alle gezichten van de school kennen en andersom. Heel graag wil ik met jou samen kijken hoe we overzicht kunnen houden . Je begeleiden bij je huiswerk, hoe pak je dat aan met al die vakken en al die docenten en nieuwe leerlingen.
Zelf werkte ik 10 jaar als zorg coördinator in het voortgezet speciaal onderwijs maar werkte ook op VMBO en MBO en ben nu filmmaakster maar mis het contact met jongeren .

Need extra support with one or more subjects, help with planning homework or learn how to best prepare for that one difficult test (week) that is coming up? I'd love to help you!
