The subject focuses on the concept of 'Bardo' embedded within a Buddhist cosmological framework. The "Bardo" as an intermediate state of reality has made thorough impact in the West through the Tibetan funerary text of Bardo Thodol ( the Great Liberation through Hearing in the Intermediate state) and Evans-Wentz's translated text, the so-called "The Tibetan Book of the Dead". A number of commentaries have been piled upon the original content and particularly Jung's commentary approaches the subject at a psycho-cosmological level. As part of our classes, we will also discuss Jung's commentary to the text to understand the reception of the original bardo concept in the western intellectual history.
