TOEFL iBT or Essentials and Duolingo (DET) Preparation

We'll first review your target score, any practice or previous exams you've taken and when your application deadlines are to make a study plan. We'll review the sections of the exam that you want to work on together, as some students preparing for the TOEFL iBT only want tutoring on a specific section.

We isolate each task to discuss the best strategy for each, then practice it. When you're comfortable, then we'll move on to the next task. I can provide homework if you'd like and I can also provide additional materials if there's something that needs fixing, like a particular grammar topic.

I'm a native English teacher, a student of Spanish, a veteran of the US Army and a former American football coach. I enjoy traveling and have spent some years living outside the US in Macedonia, Bulgaria, Kosovo and Mexico.

B.S. in Sociology from Worcester State University (3.79 GPA) and completed some coursework toward a PhD at Washington State University. In relation to football: completed coaching clinics at Washington State University under Mike Leach and summer camps at Boise State University.

Our classes will be based on your goals and current level. I teach from the pre-intermediate level to advanced and prefer working with teens and adults. It's ok if you have short term goals, like interview preparation, resume writing or preparing for a trip. It's also ok if your goals are long term where we can make a structured plan to improve every area: speaking, writing, listening and reading.

How do you learn best? We can use a book, songs, TED Talks and a variety of other material.

American Football for Beginners and Intermediates: It's not just people running into each other

This class is designed for people who want to understand American Football. It's a common thought that "it's just people running into each other", but it's like chess (just more physical) and you will understand why. We will assess your beginning knowledge and where you want your final understanding to be. By the end of our classes, you will be able to understand the basic rules, the flow of a game, terminology and how it ends.

I also have a board game that we can play (I'll send you the files) that uses actual strategy. Once you get some basics, we can use this tool to put things into practice.

That's why it's incredibly important and maybe even necessary to master the language. On top of that can it be very helpful to know English when looking for a job, applying for a course or degree program, or starting up a business. Being able to understand and speak English is often considered a pro, if not a requirement.

During this course I can help you prepare for your English test. We can practice together. In this course you can expect to learn and practice a few things:
- reading strategies that will help you find answers in a text
- listening strategies that will help you understand the conversations during the test
- grammar that will help you improve listening and reading
- the keys to writing a good essay during your test
- vocabulary to be able to understand and answer questions on the test

During the classes I will provide you with online materials. I can also give you homework that you can make and which I will check for you. After I check it we will discuss the wrong answers and focus on improving.

My classes are focused on YOU and your goal. That's why my teaching strategy will be based on your learning preferences and knowledge. If you are a visual thinker I will provide you with visualization to make the learning process easier. If you struggle at only a certain part of the test, we can focus on that part alone.
