DUTCH COURSE (For Expats,

*** THE COURSE: This course is designed for adults (18+) who want to learn Dutch in a structured and motivating way. We’ll use the textbook "Nederlands in Gang", a complete method that takes you up to level A2 (and beyond, see below!). It’s a very comprehensive program, which makes guided lessons with an experienced teacher the perfect way to follow it.
*** YOUR TEACHER... CHRISTIAAN: My name is Christiaan, and I’m a Dutch teacher with over 8 years of experience teaching at an international school. I was born in the Netherlands and speak both Dutch and English fluently. Besides teaching languages, I’m also a piano teacher and I am writing a Dutch children’s book. People often say that those from Haarlem speak the clearest Dutch — so you’ll be in expert hands!
*** YOUR CURRENT ABILITY: If you already have some knowledge of Dutch, we can continue with the next books in the same series (Nederlands in Actie, Nederlands op Niveau, Nederlands naar Perfectie). The method includes self-checks and progress tests so you can clearly track your improvement.
*** THE LESSONS: Lessons are held online via Microsoft Teams or Zoom. If you live near Haarlem, you’re welcome to join in person. Weekly participation is essential. Learning a language takes dedication, but with consistent effort, you’ll be amazed at your progress. Whether you can study 15 minutes a day or an hour, we’ll find a rhythm that fits your schedule! Ready to start your Dutch journey? Let’s begin!

My name is Christiaan (41). I am a primary school teacher and I also give piano lessons in my free time. I have written a six-part piano method (pianoboekjes.nl). I am always busy with music and playing the piano. I am Dutch, but I also speak English.

From the age of 8, I took piano lessons with Sherry van Baaren and later with Michael Markov in Enschede, as well as with several other piano teachers for shorter periods. Even at a young age, I always enjoyed playing the piano and would always try out the most challenging pieces.

I have been giving piano lessons for about five years alongside my work. I am good with children and know how to motivate them. Having written my own method and guided many different students on their musical journeys, I am well-equipped to train a student from the very beginning up to approximately conservatory entry level.

Learning to play the piano is incredibly fun! You'll learn something most people can't do, but would love to learn. You'll learn to read music, tap rhythm, use both hands simultaneously, play loudly and softly, recognize chords, and much more. Playing the piano is a true art, but almost anyone can learn it! With regular practice, you'll surprise yourself.
We start with a solid foundation, such as proper posture, hand position, reading music, and playing in tempo. For advanced students, the focus is on articulation, dynamics, phrasing, and how to play in a classical or popular style. My lessons emphasize rhythm and expression. It's not about being able to play something incredibly fast, but about being able to play a piano piece with feeling and in the right rhythm.
I'm now 41 and have been playing piano since I was 8. I started with simple pieces and took lessons from various teachers, including Sherry van Baaren. In Enschede, I studied with the Russian pianist Mikhail Markov for the correct interpretation of classical music such as Mozart sonatas and romantic pieces. All of this has led me to now teach piano myself and also to write my own piano method.
I work as a teacher at an international primary school in the Netherlands and am used to working with children aged 3-12. Four or five is the minimum age for piano lessons, but adults are also very welcome.
