My name is Dean and I am an experienced music tutor based in Maastricht, The Netherlands.
I have many years of experience working as a music teacher in the UK where I worked with children and adults. Both those who wish to have music as a hobby and those preparing for exams, auditions, and performances.
During my bachelor studies in music at the University of Manchester, I conducted research into the relationship between music performance anxiety and pedagogy and this research has enabled me to create a safe learning environment for my students.

I aim to tailor my lessons to the your specific needs and goals: learning music as a hobby, preparing for exams or performances.
I aim to create engaging content and use a wide range of learning resources and styles when teaching music theory.
I have experience of teaching classical, musical theatre, and popular singing.
As a performer, I regularly sing in the choruses of Opera Zuid, Nederlandse Reisopera, Consensus Vocalis, and Theater Aachen. In the season 2021-2022, I was a member of NKK NXT: the talent development programme of the Nederlands Kamerkoor. I also work frequently as a concert soloist.

Since childhood, I have been passionate about music, singing, and dancing along to performances on television. My musical journey began in 2001 when I started training as a pianist. In 2017, I was awarded a full scholarship to study for a Diploma in Music at SEGi College Subang Jaya, Malaysia, where I expanded my skills in classical singing and violin. I later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Vocal Studies with First Class Honours from the Royal Irish Academy of Music, accredited by Trinity College Dublin, followed by a Master’s degree in Opera and Music Performance from the Conservatorium Maastricht, graduating with cum laude.

With 17 years of teaching experience, I have guided students of all levels—from beginners to aspiring professionals. Some of my students have been accepted into prestigious music colleges with full scholarships, while others have passed their piano and singing exams with distinction. I understand that not every student enjoys music lessons at first, and I take the time to communicate with both students and parents to find the best approach for each individual. My goal is to create a positive, engaging learning environment where students not only improve their musical skills but also develop confidence, creativity, and a love for music.

Beyond teaching and performing, I am a strong believer in overall well-being—I'm a yoga and Pilates enthusiast, a lover of good food, and an avid traveler. These experiences shape my teaching philosophy, helping me bring energy, discipline, and creativity into my lessons. I am a classical guitarist in Aachen and offer guitar lessons for people who would like to learn the guitar as a classical instrument! Asturias by Isaac Albeniz or the Prelude BVW 998 by Bach are good examples if you want to see what it sounds like. I also teach Latin and Spanish guitar music.
I have been teaching regularly since 2015 and I welcome students of all ages! Can also prepare for university entrance exams.

You're in good hands! As a professional cellist for 14 years now, including as a member of major European and Australian opera and philharmonic orchestras, I welcome all students, from those picking up the instrument for the first time to those preparing for professional auditions.

My primary aim in teaching is to create an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect in which students can draw motivation to set and accomplish their goals, with my full commitment towards helping them achieve those. Getting the foundations of good playing and good musicianship right is of course a very close and no less important second!

During their journey, students can count on my patience, understanding and sympathy to help them through all challenges. I tailor my teaching style to fit all students based on their individual needs and wishes, or those of their parents if they're too young to decide for themselves.

I'm determined to break the stereotype of teachers being failed performers and teach not only by demonstration, but by playing with students as an accompanist or duet partner, even with absolute beginners.
