I’m Werner, a guitarist and educator from South Africa, now based in Haarlem.

I have 33 years of experience as a performing artist, session guitarist, and composer, and 20 years of teaching experience as a private teacher, school teacher, and Music Director. I’ve worked with students from beginners to professionals, composers, and music therapists.

A graduate of the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford (UK) and holder of a Level 6 Teaching Diploma from RSL Awards, I combine technical mastery with a holistic, creative teaching style.

I’ve performed across South Africa, England, and the Netherlands, contributed as a session guitarist to recordings and media, and founded the Haarlem Guitar Club — a growing community for players to learn, share, and connect.

Teaching guitar isn’t just what I do — it’s how I share my love for music.

Either working on the fundamentals of bass or guitar, left/right hand techniques, a specific song or even developing a more advanced playing, I always strive to bring insight and enjoyment over our music practice, I believe this is essential to connect with our creativity in a practical way, and massively improve our playing.

Normally, a lesson would be part of a cycle of lessons, involving a strategy specially adapted to the student’s needs, in that sense, we will work towards the music you are into, and grow in specific areas of your music practice and playing.

Graduated in medicine and finishing my studies of electric bass performance at the Utrecht Conservatory. Currently working as a music producer, bass player and songwriter.

Seven years of experience as a music teacher teaching electric bass technique, modern ensembles and music theory.

My interest is to approach music from its most creative perspective. The course is based on practical projects. Students are guided to create musical, audio-visual and even visual pieces using their qualities and interests. For this, students need to develop qualities strictly linked to knowledge of music or the instrument. In this way, the learning process becomes a more fun, stimulating and enriching process for the student.

For those young students who wish to learn music and perhaps later pursue higher studies in music, I offer a preparation course for the higher exams that includes the necessary training in harmony, music theory and the performance of the electric bass. In this case, it is mandatory that the student is willing to commit and has the time necessary for preparation.

Learning to play the guitar can be an amazing experience at every stage of the process! My ultimate goal is to help my students to develop their skills and musical understanding by learning and playing music that they like.

Therefore I adapt my teaching methodologies to the tastes and needs of every student. Throughout every lesson, we will work on three main courses of development: technical aspects, theoretical knowledge, and performative practice.

My classes are open for anyone who would like to enjoy exploring the universe of music: beginners and advanced, children and adults, you are all welcome to book the first lesson.

Course I: Vocal lessons

The vocal lessons are designed on the student’s needs, meaning that during the lessons we will work on whatever is there to improve in order to let you get the most from your singing voice!

During the lessons we will learn exercises to warm up and cool down the voice (so a pre- and a post- workout); we will work on vocal technique, doing specific exercises based on specific needs; we will work on the repertoire, choosing appropriate songs according to your taste and to what suits your voice the best. But, most of all, we are going to have FUN while learning and improving!

For the first lesson it would be ideal to bring one song that you know well and that you like to sing and preferably you sang already. You don’t have any song yet? no problem at all, we will start with nice exercises and we can choose together a song to work on!

Course II: Guitar lessons

Have you ever wanted to improve your guitar skills with the goal of accompanying your voice while singing? During this lessons we can work together to find the best way to accompany yourself, using the guitar as a support for your beautiful voice!

You will learn nice voicings, left and right hand technique and how to groove with nice rhythmical patterns.

Having fun is the first important step in order to learn more about this beautiful instrument. With the Suzuki method you can easily learn all styles of music and study a big repertoire of technics. We can discover different aspects of the guitar by creating personal and individual exercises in class. It's a different way to learn and a really visual method used to make learning fun for all ages. It does not matter if you are an absolute beginner with no music background. All classes can be recorded with audio devices and the music can be transcribed in tablature.

Private lessons from a very experienced bassist with over 10 years of experience performing internationally and more than 5 years as a teacher. The lessons are for all levels, it is not necessary to have previous experience. In the lessons, we'll learn the instrument and musical theory but the main focus is to play and have fun doing so. In my experience, that's the key to success.

I'm mainly focused on Jazz music but I've performed several different styles of music and the lessons can be tailored to your musical interests. I've learned to play this instrument with the best teachers in Europe but I also studied in NYC with Jazz legends such as Buster Williams, Reggie Workman and David Wong.

You can expect an personalised program, with prepared lessons based essentially in your musical interests and goals, potentially covering these topics among others: double bass technique, bowing, electric bass technique, jazz repertoire, ear training, music theory, improv techniques, rhythm, composition, basic production skills, basic piano skills.

If interested, next to the bass lessons I could also arrange ensemble lessons connecting you with fellow musicians of similar interests and skill level.
