💬 I'm Tom, and I've been teaching English since 2013. Originally I'm from the south of England, and I've been happily living in the Hague since 2021. Before this I lived in Taiwan and mainland China. TEACHING STYLE:

Although I take the IELTS test seriously, and I want you to as well, my classes are also light-hearted and warm. My classes are focused completely on test skills. You will learn how to answer questions much faster with me.

👂 LISTENING: The IELTS listening test is full of DISTRACTIONS. It is designed to make you not sure about the answer. Usually, there is not just one simple answer, but there are two or three possible answers, and only one is completely correct. I will teach you to pay attention to the correct keywords and reject the distractions. SPELLING is also very important for this test. English spelling is complicated, but there are RULES and patterns that I will teach you.

📚 READING: I will teach you how to increase your reading SPEED, quickly find key information and reject distractions. You will learn how to answer all question types including multiple choice, matching information, true/false/not given, filling in blanks, and labelling diagrams.

🖊️ WRITING: You will learn about all the Task 1 question types including graphs, charts, maps and diagrams, plus all the Task 2 essay types. My COMPLETE WRITING GUIDE will give you all of the sentence patterns and structures you need to answer any question type. Even if you don't normally write well, you will be PREPARED for the test. I will also teach you to write QUICKLY, as it is essential to finish both tasks and reach the minimum number of words within one hour.

👄 SPEAKING: I will help you answer FLUENTLY and CLEARLY without hesitation in Part 1, make short speeches in Part 2, and give long and confident answers to all types of difficult questions in Part 3. I will help you with improve your fluency, pronunciation and confidence.

I have a double master's degree in Linguistics and English, and my research focus was how to teach English pronunciation and speaking skills. I won't let you down. 🫡

I teach languages without a traditional textbook. Instead, I use interesting, naturalistic materials. I enjoy creating new materials for my students based on their needs and interests.

My classroom is a safe space where you don't ever need to feel embarrassed. My feedback is honest but never shaming. It is important to me that my students feel good about our classes and can ask for what they need any time.

My classes are light-hearted, relaxed and always interactive. People learn best when they’re enjoying themselves and feeling deeply interested, and that is my promise to you. I will correct your mistakes, but I will never shame or embarrass you for making them. My class is a place where people come to feel good and grow confidence.

You can decide what you want to do in our class. Tell me in advance, and I'll spend time preparing interesting materials. For example:

• conversations with feedback and corrections (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation)
• help with reading and writing
• understand and practise grammar
• learn idioms and natural language with context
• prepare you for visits abroad or conversations with foreigners
• creative activities like games

I'll teach you the differences between formal and informal phrases so that you use them in the right situations. For example, some Dutch people don't know this, but when you want to say "moeten", in English we usually don't say "must". That meaning of "must" is very formal and uncommon in modern spoken English. Instead, say "have to". In 1965, the Queen said "I must go to the lavatory". Everyone else in the 21st century said "I have to go to the toilet."

❗ Very importantly, I will also help you learn how to study on your own.

I know you won't be my student forever, so I want to prepare you for the future. If you hope to get good at English, it's not enough just to have a tutor once a week – the more time you put into learning English, the better and faster you'll get. I can show you how to easily make digital flashcards, write memorable notes, and use AI properly to teach you English. This way you can also keep learning after our course ends.

WILL I SOUND 100% NATIVE?
❗Research shows that for most adult speakers, it's just not possible after our teenage years to develop a fully native accent. So, honest accent coaching is not about training you to sound native. Instead, a good coach will train you to be understood by as many people as possible and communicate exactly what you intend. That means fixing problematic sounds and expanding your range of vocal styles by borrowing from voice acting techniques, from sounding authoritative and executive to warm and supportive.

If you do want to sound native, I can still help you – whichever accent you prefer – from the UK, USA, Australia or anywhere else. You might not sound fully native at the end, but you can still make adjustments so that you like the way you sound.
