About Me
My name is Stefano and I am 30 years old.
I am freelance viola player, I came from Italy to Rotterdam to get my Master Degree and pursue a career in the music field.
I started my musical education at 15 in Italy, studying Viola and Composition in Genova and La Spezia.

I moved to Rotterdam in 2016.

I am very curious and passionate about cultures, arts (like music, of course :)); I love reading books, watching a good movie and cooking.
Education
- Codarts University for the Arts, Master in Classical Music Performance, Viola, 2018
- Conservatorio G. Puccini, La Spezia, Diploma and Master Degree in Viola, 2015; Intermediate Degree in Composition, 2015;
- Liceo Classico Andrea D'Oria, Genova, Classical Studies High School degree, 2009

After graduating in Italy and moving my first step in youth orchestras (such as Italian Youth Orchestra, Orchestra Giovanile Luigi Cherubini conducted by Riccardo Muti, Orchestra del Teatro Olimpico di Vicenza), I moved to Rotterdam to complete my Master degree at Codarts, which I obtained in 2018 in Julia Dinerstein's class.
I had the luck to follow lessons and masterclasses by amazing renowned teachers, such as Alexander and Mikhail Zemtsov, members of the Rotterdam Phil, Maxim Rysanov, Simonide Braconi, Candida Thompson, Eva Stegeman.
Experience / Qualifications
As a freelance musician, I devote most of my time to chamber music and orchestra playing, collaborating with orchestras such La Toscanini di Parma, Sinfonia Rotterdam, FOI Bruno Bartoletti, Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto, Ciconia Consort and others.

Always enjoyed learning new languages (Dutch is in the making!) and sharing my experience with other people.

Music has been the cornerstone in my education: it gave me a powerful tool to discover and develop myself, and to connect with the world; I believe that the joy and magic of music should be brought to everyone, as it gives to everyone the possibility to grow and become the best version of yourself, through self-expression and listening skills.

Music is a very international field of work, so I am used to bridge with different languages and culture, and to help colleagues to better understand Italian (for example, through Opera lyrics:) )

Have always been eager to learn an instrument? have you started in your school years and now want take again that violin repertoire? Do you want to start from beginning a new hobby with music?

I had the luck to follow lessons and masterclasses by amazing renowned teachers (such as Julia Dinerstein, Alexander and Mikhail Zemtsov, members of the Rotterdam Phil, Maxim Rysanov, Simonide Braconi) realising how the teacher-student relationship is so important and fundamental for the all-round growth of the individual.
They taught me that, beside being a form of Art and a job opportunity, Music is pure enjoyment for both mind and soul; its strength is the possibility music gives you to learn about yourself, to express your emotions, to connect with other people, and all in the most enjoyable way ever, which is MAKING MUSIC! How cool is that? :)

Ciao! I have been teaching Italian for the past twelve years. I have taught privately and at language schools like La Scuola Italiana del Greenwich Village in New York and ItalCultura, the school of the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago. During the first few lessons I will make sure you have the tools to pronounce and identify all the sounds of the Italian language. This step is essential! And it will make everything easier afterwards. When I teach Italian I try to avoid all the things that I hated as a language student. We will use real songs, real literature, do real conversation and storytelling. When you are engaging all your senses it is easier to keep your mind relaxed and to remember new words.

I will customize my materials to your interests, needs and desired pace. And because you are learning from a native Italian you will also learn about Italian culture and history. You will absorb a way of thinking, not just grammar rules.

I speak a bunch of languages so I know a thing or two about how tedious language classes can be. My terrifying French teacher in middle school made us repeat the same fake dialogue from a really bad book ad nauseam, over and over and over again. Some of those dialogues are carved in my brain: “Bonjour, je m’appelle Richard Drapeau, je viens du Canada, je suis Canadien...”

When I teach Italian I try to avoid all the things that I hated as a language student. We will use real songs, real literature, do real conversation and storytelling and we will go on “talking walks” because when you are engaging all your senses it is easier to keep your mind relaxed and to remember new words.

I hold a degree in Lingue e Letterature Straniere (Foreign Languages and Literatures) from Università Roma Tre (equivalent to an American MA) and a Master’s of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts and Media from Columbia College Chicago. I wrote a thesis about translating a long epic poem by W. H. Auden and I tried to ride a horse across America.
