Learning to ply the violin and viola is a challenging enterprise; not because attaining skill and mastery are impossible, but because the techniques involved in great playing are so exacting; which means, without the right knowledge, experience, mindset, and technique, superb playing would be impossible.

What is not beneficial is the right teacher. The right teacher is a shortcut to mastery. Having a trustworthy instructor who helps make you aware of things, that you are not is totally indispensable. Having accurate and true information makes progress much more straightforward and much less painful.

In my classes, students gain all that the7 need to become great musicians, who definitely know what they are doing, and feel empowered to succeed. Having gone through the rigorous training myself, I can without a doubt help you to transcend playing limitations and become excellent musicians.

Présentation
Shawn, a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory, has been playing the violin since the age of ten. He comes from a musical family; his older brother, a cellist, is a Juilliard graduate. Shawn was the winner of the MENC all-USA High School Musicians’ Competition and also has many scholarships to his credit: Sewanee Music Festival, Apple Hill Chamber Music Festival, and the Dean’s Talent Award at Oberlin, where he studied with Marilyn McDonald. In his time at Oberlin, Shawn played in master classes for renowned artists like Anner Bylsma, Jennifer Koh, and Rachel Barton Pine. Through his playing Shawn has participated in chamber music and symphonic tours on four continents. He has had the opportunity to concertize in venues such as Carnegie Hall, and the Walt Disney Concert hall. As a teaching artist, Shawn has taught around the world, as a chamber musician, solo violinist and orchestral director, most notably at The Franz Liszt Conservatory in Quito, Ecuador and on faculty at myriad institutions such as Community MusicWorks in Providence, RI. Shawn is the concertmaster of the San Gabriel Orchestra in Austin,TX.

As a composer, Shawn has been commissioned to write works, that have received their premiere to critical acclaim.

An avid chamber musician, Shawn has worked with artists such as Leonard Matczyznski, Miles Hoffman of the American Chamber Players, and Andras Fejer, of the Takacs Quartet. He plays on a violin by Gary Rickman, on generous loan from Neil Rickman and the Rachel Elizabeth Barton Foundation.

Shawn loves to explore not only alternative musical genres, such as rock, jazz, hip-hop and R&B, but also other art forms such as poetry, photography, and musical arranging. He loves working with students of all ages and backgrounds and relishes the opportunity to meet and connect with people!
