After earning my ATCL Diploma with Distinction, I went on to become a piano and keyboard teacher, teaching students here in NZ and in Los Angeles, California, where I lived for a number of years.

As a classically trained piano teacher, as well as a singer/songwriter with piano as my main instrument, I can teach you a variety of skills. In these classes, you will learn several techniques including scales and arpeggios, building up your skills and repertoire of your choice and most of all, have lots of fun!

Tessa is a Kiwi actress and musician who up until recently was based in Los Angeles, California. She recently made the decision to move home due to COVID-19, and has completed her 14-day quarantine healthy and symptom-free!

Beginning classical voice at the age of 3, Tessa now has over 18 years of music-related experience and is classically trained in piano, voice, and drama. Her love for music and appreciation for those who mentored her in her youth led her to develop a desire to teach, which she began 5 years ago, after completing her Trinity College ATCL Diploma, with Distinction.

A student of the prestigious NZ Singing School and National Youth Drama School in New Zealand, Tessa developed a love for both classical music and musical theatre, and went on in her career to reprise lead roles in various musicals including Veronica in ‘Heathers’, Vanessa in ‘In the Heights’ and Lindsay in ‘Godspell’, where she also assisted the musical director in teaching the cast. From a pool of thousands, Tessa was selected perform at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in England, where she played Celia in ‘As You Like It’, earning her the Hastings Young Achiever award.

The cultural prefect of her high school, she quickly realized the positive influence a kind and safe space to learn can effect in students, regardless of their age or background. Having experienced teaching students of all ages, Tessa feels confident interacting with a wide range of personalities and abilities, always creating a comfortable learning environment that fosters passion for the craft, balanced with learning new and technical aspects.

Welcome to the world of music!

In this course, we will dive together into learning each musical instrument through an integrated approach that enhances your technical skills and satisfies your passion for music.

In Oud, we will focus on:

Musical Maqams: Deepen your understanding of Arabic Maqams and how to apply them to playing. Musical Notes: Learn to read and perform notes on the oud with skill. Pick Exercises: Improve playing techniques using a pick to develop movement between the strings. Technique Exercises: Build playing skills through various exercises to improve speed and accuracy. Oriental Songs: Learn to play the most famous oriental tunes and songs to be able to give a distinctive performance. Musical Pieces: Study traditional and contemporary oriental pieces while developing individual performance skills.

As for the piano, we will focus on:

Musical Notes: Learn to read and write notes easily while improving your musical skills. Musical Scales: Study major and minor scales and their effect on playing pieces. Chords: Learn to build different chords and how to use them in playing. Western and Eastern Pieces: Present a mix of Western and Eastern pieces that enhance your skills and develop your artistic taste. Technique Exercises: Advanced exercises to improve hand coordination and improve performance on the piano.

In guitar, we will learn:

Musical Notes: Read and write notes easily and effectively on the guitar. Chords: Study chords and how to use them in songs and pieces. Technique Exercises: Exercises to develop left and right hand speed, focusing on accuracy and transition between chords. Musical Pieces: Learn to play different pieces from a variety of styles including Eastern and Western songs.

In oriental singing, we will learn:

Vocal Techniques: Exercises to strengthen and improve the voice, with an emphasis on breathing techniques and larynx control. Oriental Performance: Learn how to perform famous oriental songs, paying attention to the tones and subtleties that characterize Arabic singing.
