Spanish as a Second Language: Language, Literature, Cinema, and Hispanic Culture
Àpd 60 $ /h
Hi! My name is Armando, and I am a native Spanish speaker from Cuba. I am currently pursuing my Ph.D. in Spanish at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), where I also teach Spanish language and Hispanic culture courses.
My lessons are designed for learners of all levels — from complete beginners to advanced students. What makes my classes unique is that I combine Spanish language instruction with a strong focus on Hispanic literature, cinema, and culture. This allows you not only to improve your grammar, vocabulary, and fluency but also to gain a deeper understanding of the richness and diversity of the Spanish-speaking world.
In our lessons you will:
• Practice oral and written communication in Spanish.
• Learn vocabulary and grammar in context.
• Explore literary texts and films adapted to your level.
• Discover cultural aspects that will enrich your learning experience.
Each lesson is personalized: whether you are preparing for exams, need Spanish for work, are traveling, or simply want to deepen your cultural knowledge, I will adapt the material to your goals.

Présentation
Teaching, for me, is not only about transmitting knowledge but about building relationships and creating a space where learning becomes a shared journey. I see the classroom—whether online or in person—as a place of dialogue, exchange, and mutual discovery.
As a teacher, I am demanding and rigorous, but always on the basis of mutual commitment. I do not expect perfection from my students; rather, I value sincerity, dedication, and the willingness to grow. What matters most is the student’s honesty and human quality during the learning process.
I have taught Spanish language and culture at the university level in three different countries—Cuba, Mexico, and the United States—which has given me a broad, multicultural perspective on education. My approach is conversational and immersive: students are encouraged to engage actively, reflect, and arrive at knowledge through guided dialogue, while I provide structure, support, and direction.
Every class is an opportunity not only to improve your Spanish but also to share in the richness of Hispanic culture while learning together.

Education
I hold a B.A. in Art History from the University of Havana, an M.A. in Cinema Studies (Art History) from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and I am now completing my doctoral studies at UPenn. My academic training across Cuba, Mexico, and the United States has enriched my teaching practice with a transnational perspective on Hispanic language, literature, and culture.
Expérience / Qualifications
With years of teaching experience at the university level in the U.S., I combine academic rigor with dynamic, student-centered methods.
